Does this affect how far away the scenery is drawn, or how far away you can see mobs and enemies, or both? :)

scenery only

It affects only how far the scenery is drawn. Everyone sees mobs and enemies up to the same distance.

thanks for the fastest reply ever! :D
incidentally that's good, i thought it might affect mob distance but now i can get my fort battles to run super fast :metal:
also incidentally, could a possible fix for fort battle client lag be to dynamically turn all the graphics options down to minimum when more than say 30 people are on screen? you've probably already thought of it, but there's an idea :)
:clapclap:

i play in 800x600x16 and i run everything at minimum, and the only effect i have turned on is particle (it's good to see the spells), with my current crappy card (nvidia 5700) i still drop down to around 5-10 fps in fort battles, but it is definitely faster than having all the settings higher

at least you have Nvidia.
I have a fairly good ATI 9800Pro graphic card and I have to play in safe mode on Linux as those ATI/AMD bastards release crappy drivers and only focus on DirectX.
This is really suck.

With a brand new and steamy comp and a GeForce 8600GT, I play 1680x1050, medium settings (low in everything unneeded but high in range, antialiasing, etc) without any kind of client-side lag even in the biggest fort battles.

why only medium setting ?
in beta when the game was working perfectly with my ATI card I set all to high.
I still can't get what NGD have changed there, so it's not working now.

Because I don't care for pretty graphics and the bugs/crashes they may imply.

cause he has anti asaiiling on, everything looks better, cause it removes the jagged edges from things, if you also have the ansiostropic filtering on things at a distance look better as well as it adds more depth preseption to the graphics.

strangely when I put my anti analising on, the game won't run at all.
well....I have ATI :(
