I get the impression it may be a graphics/font problem? I have an nVidia 6200 with the latest driver on Ubuntu 7.10.

Starting Regnum like this should help with the glib thing. Seems to be an error with memory allocation.

I had hughe problems with 169.07. It made my Xserver freeze every 3 seconds. I went back to the older one.

I think that the problem is coming from the library , someone reported the same problem with gentoo, it has something to do with the libraries, debian uses "stable" versions, these versions are often old.

I tried on 169.04 and 169.07 drivers. Any drivers prior to that cause system problems for me.

I don't know if this will have any real meaning, but just to give you an example... The Wine project has a different install package for each version of Ubuntu. That leads me to believe that each version of Ubuntu may have fundamental changes which must be considered when dealing with pre-compiled binaries.

As pointed out Surak, software in Debian is often very old due to their very strict software guidelines.
Most Linux users have largely abandoned Debian these days and it should not be used for tests for this very reason. :p

Perhaps something more new-age such as Ubuntu(ease of use) or Gentoo(power and complexity) would be more appropriate.

That's not entirely true (though it seems it will become the bitter reallity in no time), there's a great number of users who still use Debian as their primary distro (like me). You could enable the Syd repos. to download the testing libs for compiling...

I prefer to stick to the "old and tested" rather than the "new and possibly buggy" software.

Debian testing, stable and Ubuntu Feisty are alright. Only Gutsy is problematic.

Debian and Mandriva (+ their variants) use a vanilla glibc. Same with their kernels.

I played regnum (among other tests) today with a nv 8800 GT + drivers 169.07, a nightmare under Ubuntu Feisty/Gutsy and Debian testing (crashes, freeze, lags, and this malloc() thingy). Archlinux and Fedora don't have such problems... non-flavoured glibc and kernel.

Software is like dope, it's better when it's pure :cuac:

And as Katiechan said, Ubuntu follows the Debian testing lifecycle, not stable.

I tried this on Sabayon Linux 3.5 r1 (64bit). I used the latest installer from the RO download page. The installer worked fine.

I searched for a solution and found the command MALLOC_CHECK that helped a lot of users. I got this error message after I entered my login datas.
softknight@sabayon ~ $ MALLOC_CHECK_=0 ./regnum/rolauncher

softknight@sabayon ~ $
softknight@sabayon ~ $ ./regnum/rolauncher
Speicherzugriffsfehler
softknight@sabayon ~ $

The client finds my account and ends with a "Segmention Fault"

Here's the message from the runlauncher.sh file
softknight@sabayon ~/regnum $ sh runlauncher.sh
malloc: using debugging hooks
runlauncher.sh: line 3: 14028 Speicherzugriffsfehler ./rolauncher


My system:
Notebook Dell Inspiron 1501
AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-58
ATI Radeon XPRESS onboad graphic (IIRC 1150er Version)
Broadcom Wireless Lan (thanks to Kernel 2.6.25, it's working)
Sabayon Linux (http://www.sabayonlinux.org) 3.5 r1 64bit

I'm not so experienced in Linux and don't know where and how the reason for this error can be found.

Also try
MALLOC_CHECK_=1 ./regnum/rolauncher Some users have reported this to work where =0 would fail.

Yes, I followed some threads about this. Here is the message:

It is so unusual that the client starts normal an ends in after entering the login datas.

I try to wipe out MS systems out of my mind, but it's the only way for me playing RO.
