this list will contain some common linux problems, if you got any problems you can look here for an answer before taking time to post something, if the answer to your problem is here it'll save you time waiting for a response.

I'm having trouble with my ati graphic card
Ati and linux does not walk 100% successfully hand in hand because of thier drivers, even though ati has been ordered by amd to make proper drivers they don't seem to be ready yet.

http://www.regnumonline.com.ar/forum/showthread.php?t=10534

I recokn' there was a guide somwhere but I can't remember where it is

------------------------------------------------------

it says my card is too old

have a look at this HOW TO (http://regnumonline.com.ar/forum/showthread.php?t=31371)

-------------------------------------------

I accidently dragged my chat window out of the screen so I can't drag it back

[i]you'll have to change to another solution in game, log out, log back in and before you enter the game you go into options and change it to your previous(and possibly desired) solution and it should be reset.

All the problem i'm gonna list aren't linux specific, but design specific IMHO, here they are:

- free() more than once on pointers, that causes a crash if you don't set your environment correctly.

- preferences for combat log not saved.

- can't exit game if you lost connection (really hate that one when playing fullscreen). It happens when you're internet connection fails.

- can't resize anymore the inventory window.

- I get kill all the time, that must be a bug :)

The ping window in the Linux version doesn't always display Inet ping, only Server ping.
I have actually only been able to get it to display the Inet ping once, and that was just a random coincidence.

Keep in mind that I've been playing for ages, and usually have the ping window up every time...
the inet ping doesn't show up when I press alt+p while there's a lag, may it be connection or serverwise

Often after a crash, when I relog I appear where I was 5 or 10 minutes earlier, all of what I've done in the meanwhile have been forgotten, it's really annoying when doing a quest.

And yet this is another broken design of the integrity of the data. It must be fixed ASAP (as lag), IMHO.

ok, were shell I start...?
1. Sometimes when quiting the game it also restarts the Xserver (Ubuntu gibbon).
2. Sometimes the game crashes for no reason (must be my ATI videocard, he is good but the game support of it under Linux is lame),
3. Sometimes the game disconnects and I can reconnect only after 10 minutes.

Well - the client has an annoying ability to keep forgetting the resolution that I want to play in - so each and every time I have to change it from 800x600 to 1280x800.

I experience a few seg faults - where can I post logs?

The in-game help doesn't work. If I click How to Play in main menu it just gives me a blank space, which is irritationg, since i'm just new to this game and I wanted to learn how to trade with other players yesterday and I couldn't look it up.
The menu of the guide works though -- I can select a category, it just doesn't display any text in the window.

What's the only problem I have on Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon with 512 MB nvidia GeForece 7 7500 card, all other things work :wiggle14:

Alt+tab doesn't work. (I'd like to be able to pop out to the desktop, check e.g. spell info over at Zona de Guerra, and then pop back in, rather than having to quit.)

Switching between workspaces doesn't work.

That said, I am delerious with joy that you bothered to do a linux client at all. Thank you ever so much.

I dont know if this is a bug with the Linux client only since I dont have a windows machine to test this on.

the background image on the character select screen is garbbled. it is off center and segmented. kind of like those pictures where there are two pictures in one and if you slide the one image over, everything matches (i know, im great at explaining things). i will try to take a screen shot tonight when i get home.

this isnt the same issue as with the nvidia driver problem. the character select screen is the only time when the image is just broken. everything else works flawless. and its only the background image thats messed up, nothing else.

EDIT: here are two screenshots of what i am talking about.

I am having the same problem as Sakuramboo, with the only difference being that the 'garbling' for me is a bit different than the screenshots above.
EDIT: btw this is with linux 32bit installer version, downloaded today.

ok.... let me just add one... to this list
When I'm playing the game... after some time... the game will seem almost to just freeze... I mean I can still press some of the buttons... like for example WASD, Up, Dn, Lt, Rt, ESC, seem to all work. All other keys dont. Alt+F4 I know doesn't work... and I've just learned that the equiv for Alt+TAB in Regnum is Alt+Enter so I'll have to try that the next time this happens. I can press all of the moving buttons and my charectar's sprite does the movement animation but it's position doesn't change. Whenever I go to Quit from the Esc Menu. It says Logging out in...
that's it no count down time.... whatsoever. Which really angers me... and then only way to fix it is for me to do a force shutdown. So is there anything that I can do?

that isnt a problem with regnum, its a problem with the nvidia drivers. you are using 169.x, the latest version should fix it.

and might i add, my problem, i believe to be the same issue because i just checked and the latest nvidia drivers arent available in the ubuntu repos yet, which means im still running 169.x too.

They *are* available, it's the package with the -envy suffix on it's name, look it up. I'm using these drivers atm, since when I upgraded to hardy, I got the white-stripes thingy :/ Installing the envy package solved all my issues.

Problem solved!

BUT an important note to anyone else about to use this solution:
Make sure you install the 'build-essential' package (if not already installed) as well as the 'nvidia-glx-new-envy' package, or you'll find yourself in a vesa mode after reboot. ;)

Ok, yesterday, I installed Regnum - ran great (other than the sudden lag/crash). Then, I tried to play it again - but after I log in and select the world, I get a big, blank, white screen. I hear music, I hear talking, but I don't see anything. Esc skips the talking, but, I still don't see anything. Any ideas?

Try to remove all data and reinstall Regnum, it usually helps.

I've not heard of any problem related to ati or nvidia cards in the last months, at least in the Spanish section. The real probem are the Intel 950 cards.

One issue I have found while playing Regnum though the AMD64 architecture is that the game tends to crash when I make sharp turns. Like running up a tower. I have heard similar X64 users running Arch OS having the same problem.

Installed the game just fine. I ran the client, entered my user/pass in, and hit log in. It says it's logging in, then the client just quits on me.

Running an ATI All In Wonder 2006 video card. I even went ahead and got EnvyNG, uninstalled my drivers, then reinstalled, and nothing happened. Still the same problem.

Sounds like you need a reboot, typically after installing new video drivers you need a reboot. I typically try to sway ppl away from the Envy drivers now because they become a pain during system updates. If you try to update to a new kernel you must uninstall the envy drivers and reinstall after the new kernel is in place. With Repository restricted drivers for ubuntu at least the DKMS system will recompile the module each update so no need for uninstall.

Script file is just a .sh extension text file with commands in it. Just create a text file in nautilus or dolphin or even by command line using : touch rolauncher.sh and edit with your flavor of text editor. Paste the commands from the post Znurre linked you too and run it in command line from terminal using: sh rolauncher.sh

Should get it working.

I'm playing RO on Fedora Core 8 and this game works well, I will only report 2 minor problems:

1. If Num Lock is on, <Enter> button does not work, so I can't chat
I believe this is an issue related only to my laptop keyboard (HP 6820s). Num Lock on my laptop is weird and has three states (NUM_ON, NUM_OFF and I'm not sure what is third state for actually) under all OS and confuses some apps

2. Not sure if this is only Linux related bug, but sometimes '?' is not visible over NPC's head when I need to talk to him in quest. Also sometimes when I finish quest, '?' is still visible

uname -r: 2.6.26.8-57.fc8

Hi! Here's my problem, and I think it should be on Known Problems, because after all, I'm used the dreaded Jaunty (Even so, I love it, hehe).

I done everything that was said in the post of the fake root and it helped me a lot for, finally, opening a Launcher and actually entering the game. For the first time of using RO in this computer, I even watch the video (in Hardy, there was no video at all). But here's the problem.

An image is worth one thousand words, right? This is how I see the game, with or without Compiz. Everything deactivated and even tried safe mode, but it was the same. Any ideas?

http://img190.imageshack.us/content.php?page=done&l=img190/8835/screenshot2009061304511.jpg

On terminal, it started too appear this:

On Hardy it was slow and all, but I didn't had that kind of problems. Any help for using RO in Jaunty now? :)

Hi all, before starting i must say that i'm very happy that a such beautiful game has linux client...
anyway i've got a problem:
In one of my desktop workstation i use mandriva 2009.1 that uses pulseaudio...
i have 1 integrated audio card 1 usb xifi audio adapter and 1 usb microphone from the logitech webcam
when i play there's a lag of some _SECONDS_ in audio output respect of when the action is realized on video...
I dunno if it's a problem of pulseaudio but i cannot disable it due to the ability to transfer streams over the cards... Do you know how to fix or some workarounds to my problem?

btw in another computer i use ubuntu jaunty and there's no problem...

Thanks for all

i got 2 problems (ubuntu 9.10)

the game doesn't have the sound...sometimes the sound appears all of a sudden..plays for some sec...then crackles...and then it eventually disappers again. I've searched the forum for solutions and tried some of them but nothing changed.

the other problem came up after the game blocked one time and i had to shut off the computer...after i log in and choose my realm the game loads and verifies the data and all goes well until it verifies characters.sdb
The loading blocks right there with "verifying characters.sdb".

Some ideas to solve these problems?

BTW: the fact that a good mmorpg like ro has a linux native client...rocks! Thank u guys.

i got 2 problems (ubuntu 9.10)

the game doesn't have the sound...sometimes the sound appears all of a sudden..plays for some sec...then crackles...and then it eventually disappers again. I've searched the forum for solutions and tried some of them but nothing changed.

BTW: the fact that a good mmorpg like ro has a linux native client...rocks! Thank u guys. The first problem is most probably caused by Pulse Audio, not much to do about it except uninstalling it.
There are various instructions for that on the forums I think.

As for the second problem, try deleting characters.sdb in your Regnum folder, that might help.

Whenever I log out from the game (Hit ESC and choose Exit Game) I get the countdown until shutdown but at the end of the countdown when the game is supposed to quit I get a message of failed internet connection or something. Hitting 'Accept' on that screen does nothing.

To quit the game I have to open the system monitor and kill the executable (./game) via the sysmon GUI. Doing the "kill <PID #>" just won't kill it. Maybe if I tried with -force option it might.

Anyways, it's not fun to always having to kill the client manually.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 and even though the client tells me the cause is the internet connection failing I don't think it's in my end. My internet connection has worked nicely for a long time.

Yeah, the "connection has failed" message appears to be the default in the current client when you log out, but mine always exits when I hit "accept". I think this is a bug in the client, and it maybe that the client is not sending the correct kill messages to your window manager.

Same problem here. It just freezes. Even killing it manually doesn't work for me

Yes you do, you use ubuntu and ubuntu is filled with crap like pa (and worse) by default. Unfortunately, what Znurre suggested will probably break your whole sound system in ubuntu if you don't make a lot of manual adjustments to your system. Seeing that you're on ubuntu + you have no clue what's on your system I don't see how you could do this without causing even more problems.

Using Ubuntu 10.04, currently I have 2 problems (not sure if anyone else is experiencing them, but this should be included anyway). First when I startup the game the opening logo/video doesn't play (not worried about that). But when I select my Realm the game crashes on me, regardless if I am using compiz or not, also I have tried reinstalling once, however there is another bug when installing or uninstalling, at the end of either process both my task bars vanish forcing me to restart.
(Game settings are: 800x600x16 [tried with 800x600x32], Horus server, fullscreen disabled).

Using Ubuntu 10.10,I have a problem.First when I try running the game, everything is normal(however loading screen before character select screen is a bit slow),but when I press play on any one of my characters,it gets stuck at the loading screen. Also I sometime get an error code when its checking firewall. It says [err][ui_elements] then something else, can't remember a code like that, and if I wait at the loading screen long enough,it says i have been disconnected from the server.Once when I did login, all of my stats(health, mana, intel, etc.)were 0.My brother told me to reinstall, but now it say connection to autopatch server failed.

Sounds like you're having problems connecting to the autopatch server. Check your network settings. Are you behind a proxy?

So, I downloaded this game on my pc with windows xp a couple years ago. This computer only has 200+MB of ram (forget the exact amount, but it's low 200s). The graphics card is utter crap. Everything about that computer was CRAP. Now I have my own computer, and not the family computer, which has 512mb of ram, and I don't know anything about the graphics card, but I was told and it is obvious to me that the graphics card is better than the old computer. This computer has Linux, so it does not support direct x, but if you put a LINUX version of this game up for download, one would assume you would not need direct x to play this game. That is not the case, however. The only solution you offer: Get direct x support. This is incredibly stupid and I am quitting this game because I have spent painless days trying to get converters and all that crap, and even with direct x, I still don't have a good enough graphics card. This is the dumbest load of utter bull crap I have ever heard because this graphics card was made in 2005 along with the computer, where my old computer that I played this game on at first was made in 2002, so take a guess, the 2005 graphics card is OBVIOUSLY better. Is this a joke? If yes, congrats, you made me laugh like noone before.

With around 256 (I guess that's the number) ram you don't really have a chance playing any game. Upgrading to 512mb gives you barely the minimum playing the game on lowest settings. You didn't give any details on your graphic card, but I would guess it is quite obstolete.

Direct X support is required on most games. Just download it.

Give some technical specifications on the "new" pc...

Well it is true RO have some problems, but speaking of DirectX in Linux...Well for linux there is no such thing as DirectX - it is Microsoft only API, so not possible to be used here. Linux client uses OpenGL, OpenAL.

When i started at 2008 RO got alot smaller system requirements. After that there was an major engine update of the game and i doubt game even will run with 512 RAM. With some older graphics card(you do not specified what your system have) you maybe will be possible to run in Fixed Pipeline mode. RO is alot CPU consuming too.

When RO says that "your video card is too old ... you have to install direct x" on startup on Linux, it means either your video card is really too old, or that you didn't have installed the proprietary drivers, because the opensource drivers shipped out of the box in most of the distros can't run RO (unless you install the external dxtn/s3tc library).
So you have to install the proprietary drivers in order to get rid of the message and play the game (Catalyst/fglrx for ATI for example). So read the wikis of your distribution.

But I agree, the message speaks of DirectX even on Linux, which is nonsense xD

There's a native Direct3D 11 state tracker for Gallium3D drivers xD http://www.osnews.com/story/23826/New_Implementation_Direct3D_11_COM_API_for_Gallium
Plus Wine does its job for DirectX <10.

I prefer OpenGL instead of DirectX.The main troble it's the code wrote for OpenGL or NG3D engine.

If someone will take a look at OpenGL SE (i know it's specific for mobile devices) runing on IOS or Android he will be able to see damn good performances even with shaders for that small hardware capabilitys.

And ofc that windows with "Install last Direct X" apears on mac also :)))

Nearly everything works. I don't get a neat picture of my toon in the upper left corner, but that's okay; I don't get the nifty graphics during the login sequences, but that's okay too.

The Premium store, however, seems to be missing the "Paint" entry. While I can run the Windows client under Wine (and have in the past) to make the purchase, it seems to me that something is wrong here.

Not sure how to force it, either.

"Nearly everything works", yup.
The only substantial Linux issues I currently have are: (with old Nvidia 218 model GPU).
1) NGD recently eliminated the shader model line from the game.cfg file, & thus I can no longer use "low option" video setting in game, but then change the SM to 3 or 4. (Result, I lose a few fps, & have to use medium setting; otherwise, I cannot see any water, which is dangerous).
2) I have not been able to use "beam weapons" option for years. It did not work, then it worked for a few months a few years ago, then it hasn't worked ever since (it crashes the game if on). Result, I cannot easily see missile attacks on my character, & often get hit more times than I would like before I notice it (this is only real issue I wish I did not have to contend with).

Issue: Game crashes to desktop (CTD) upon startup
Fix: check the integrity of game files
How: open steam library, right-click the game, go to properties, choose the "local files" tab and then click "verify integrity of game files..."
After that, the game will download and update files if any failed the integrity test.
In my case it was 16 files that failed the test.

It fixed my problem today, so maybe it'll help others too.

Is it the 64 or 32 bit client under steam ? I have that problem that Ro doesnt start but installed under steam it works with graphic errors and low fps...
