Are you running Vista? I had that problem unless I right-click and "Run as Administrator". That enables writing files in the Program Files directory. If you aren't running Vista, that probably isn't your problem...

I am getting the same problem. I just downloaded the client and just finished installing it. The patching is going around in circles. my systems specs are:
System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 2
Computer:
Intel(R)
Pentium(R) D CPU 3.00GHz
3.00 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM
Physical Address Extension
What to do???

I had this problem on an XP administrator account. But when I tried running under 2000 I got a different result. XP gave me the opening patching screen in english and then went into an infinite patch loop that loaded down the process list with multiple copies of regnumonline.exe. But 2000 gave the opening patch screen in spanish and patched just fine and I could get into the game.
I had this problem once on a windows box, i checked in the Task Manager and had two regnum processes working there. Killing the older one lead to the update working normally again.
