View Full Version : Game freezing in irregular intervalls

Since the latest Update I suffer frequent freezes of Regnum. After an uncertain time of gameplay the game freezes shortly for one second. This lasts around a minute and then the game runs fine again. The game freezes every second or third second during this period which makes playing impossible.
Also I got the following issue several times today. I saw a player moving towards me. Well... I did not see the player, I only saw his turban and his staff. I was not able to choose him as my target. However, in Windowed mode the screen shot function does not work anymore.
I wanted to attach a screenshot here but it was not saved in the screenshot folder.
I use 169.12 Nvidia driver, released in February, with a GeForce8600GTS.
No, I won't downgrade my driver, since older drivers show the freezing problem, too. I lock out a system problem, since Regnum is the only Application with that problem. UT2004 is running fine. By the way, the new nvidia drivers improved the performance for 8xxx series a lot. In Regnum I get ~20 FPS more than before.
Well. I am still using Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. This could possibly be a problem here since it is a bit old. Maybe too old for this fast changing world.

No! Not just Regnum freezes. It is my complete System. Even Amarok stops playing music.

I've had similar problems.... Try disable Post Processing.

I have this same problem :( it showed up since I installed 169.xx drivers. I tried safe mode and it seemed to work fine... but I didn't play too much. Looks like some opengl-extension is causing trouble.

Same problem here. Just that when I use the 100 drivers, X restarts when using opengl. I didn't change a thing, since I use the installer from nvidia. I got some crashes with ubuntu (running 169)... Shall I pack 'em and post 'em?

I am just sitting in school and read this xD
Well, I experienced this with the earlier drivers, too. I did not play much, too in the last time so I cannot say that for sure but I am quite sure that this happened with the older drivers too but not that frequent. And the behaviour that Xeph described.
And Gigo... It is not my RAM. I have 2GB of RAM and when playing regnum it is used 60-80%. And my 800MB of SWAP is not used.
On some startups I also crash after choosing character. I remember an error concerning lua. Something like:
PANIC: attempted to call a nil(or null, not sure here) lua value
I am sitting in school right now. I'll give the exact error later but I do not think that this is related to this.

I have also freezing problems but not only the game nor the whole system, by me the xserver freezes (so I can't use my keyboard and mouse and have to restart like happy customers of M$)
I tried setting different types of game settings but it seems not to be dependent on it
I have ATi Mobility Radeon X1300 with fglrx 8.02 working satisfactorily on Ubuntu 7.10, Xorg 7.2
and a little more - I think it happens only in fulscreen, in windowed mode only the game window crashes

I've been running some tests, it looks like there's a problem in the way regnum enables multisampling.
Try disabling it from control center, or force it to disabled using driver settings. (i think it can be done from there)

Can someone confirm this issue is still happening with the last update?

Don't know if its the same one for me but i had no freezes before the last update and now my game freezes for 15-30 seconds sometimes. The game just stops responding, everything else works just fine.

I experience freezing too, not that othen than before the update bit it still happens. My computer makes a "pieeeeeeep" noise then. The sound is like pressing a key for a too long time, actually it happens while running, so I press a key all the time.
But I am not skilled in computer stuff so I have no clue whether is is just my maschine or the game. But as I said, it happens much less than before update.
Edit: I just saw it is linux board here, I run windows, not linux...so don't mind then

Well the same here. It started with the last update. The game simply freezes, system is OK (just need to kill the game using ssh from another machine). And it is not lag, this never happened before the last patch.

Which nvidia driver is everyone who experiences freezing using? Because I'm using 100.14.19 and never experienced any freezing, before or after.

I have been having the same problem, using ati x850 pro proprietary drivers. I thought that i might reformat, since ive been meaning to for some time anyways, now i cannot even launch the game, but im going to have to start a new thread for that.
Anyways, it seemed to kill X, my mp3s kept playing, mouse worked fine in the game, but keyboard would not respond, though i could turn caps LED on and off. I would have to ctrl-alt-backspace to kill x, use the process manager to kill the game, and relog in; during that time i would die. It happened far more frequently in pvp than it did just leveling; nothing seemed to help, turned off post processing, kicked down the graphics to where it was almost intolerable to play, and turned off all unneeded processes. Still, it would lock, i waited about a minute once to see if i could get it to wake up, but it never happened.
When i relogged into X, the game was still running, as in not stopped, and not zombie. Hope this helps, too bad i trashed that install or i could have gotten some logs.

Thats the exact same driver I am using.
However, the freezing problem (and crashes, see thread http://www.regnumonline.com.ar/forum/showthread.php?t=20839 for more info) started roughly 6 days ago.
I have made NO (thats right, no) changes to my OS in over a month. it appears that this problem may have resulted from an update automatically downloaded by the client. I have tried turning off all enhanced graphic capabilities, but to no avail. the game either freezes (state in "ps ax" is RLl with increasing cpu time) or a crash (again, see the aforementioned thread for details).
this is apparently NOT a client computer problem as this is appearing across multiple linux distro's and multiple hardware configurations (yes, I've been reading up on this to find a way to fix mine).

n7zzt can you show me the output of the following command:
cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status

Fast writes and SBA can actually be detrimental, and can cause freezes and lockups of the entire system, I don't remember the details if it only works reliably on some chipsets or what, but it should be explained in the gargantuan nvidia readme ( /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA*/README.txt ).
Specifically what I was curious about was if agp was shown as disabled, because that can cause choppiness and/or freezing.
Do you use the kernel's or nvidia's agp driver (agpgart and nvagp)? Check if there's an nvagp option under the appropriate device section in the X config, there are 3 values, prefer agpgart, prefer nvagp, prefer one but fall back on the other if it doesn't work, don't remember which value corresponds to which method, but it should also be in the readme; You could try using whichever one you're not using currently and see if you experience a difference.

n7zzt can you show me the output of the following command:
cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
mine is not an agp card. its an nvidia card on a PCI-E slot.
info on the card:
cat /proc/driver/nvidia/cards/0
Model: GeForce 6200 TurboCache(TM)
IRQ: 18
Video BIOS: 05.44.02.52.00
Card Type: PCI-E
DMA Size: 39 bits
DMA Mask: 0x7fffffffff
Bus Location: 05.00.0
since I do not have agp here, that would be displayed
here is the dir info for proc/driver/nvidia:
ls /proc/driver/nvidia/
<cards> registry version <warnings>

pci-e is out of my depth, I haven't bought a new computer in ages and thus have never personally messed with it; however a quick and dirty google tells me that agpgart is still involved even in pci-e stuff, and alternatively nvagp, can you cat the file called registry in that dir and show me the output?
