Wait until all textures have finished downloading. If the problem still exists, post again. Use the newest nvidia (beta) drivers, too.

The new NVIDIA drivers fixed this problems.
They are now considered stable.

Download them on http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html

First press Ctrl+Alt+F1
And here log in as root with your admin pass.

init 3

chmod +x ./NVIDIA*
./NVIDIA* -q

init 5
Good luck :)
Remember that you will also need the kernel-source and kernel-headers to compile the drivers, perhaps also some compilers.

Right, now when I think about I'm pretty sure there's nothing like init in Ubuntu.
So you'll have to wait for someone that's more experienced with Ubuntu than me.

Hi Neo95,

You must kill the GDM.

sudo killall gdm

gah, I got that issue too. I don't wanna mess with the package manager, I did that once and it did not turn out well, 2 sets of drivers installed, one by the packet manager, one by me (compiled from nvidia).

Any advice? Wait until the package manager includes the 173 set of drivers? :/

EDIT: I just found a package in hardy's repo's called nvidia-glx-new-envy, the version number says 173.blah.blah, switching drivers atm, will let ppl know how this goes :)

EDIT2: Yeap, that did the trick. Just install the nvidia-glx-new-envy drivers and bye bye broken textures, no need to compile any drivers yourself and drive the package manager nuts. Remember to reboot the pc, not just restart X. :dumbofme:
