I'm very new to Linux so call me a noob and just remember to go easy with me. What would cause something like this? How can I fix?

Update your nvidia drivers to the latest version.

With some luck you can use
glxinfo
in a terminal to get your card. Look for lines that start like this
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 8600 GTS/PCI/SSE2/3DNOW!
OpenGL version string: 2.1.2 NVIDIA 173.14.05
I have a GeForce 8600 GTS and have NVIDIA 173.14.05 driver for that installed.
Then use
http://www.nvidia.co.uk/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-uk
for drivers and locate the newest for your card using the infos derived from glxinfo. If there is a newer one, consider installing it.

the other option to what padreigh said is to install envy. If your new to Linux, envy is a simpler option heres the link
http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html
once installed just simply pick an earlier driver

OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 6150/PCI/SSE2/3DNOW!
OpenGL version string: 2.1.2 NVIDIA 169.12
Does that mean its a GeForce 6 series card?

Thank you kailer, inkster, and padreigh. It works good now, what I did was install envyng and updated to 173.14.09, now it works great and that also fixed some other problems that I had with compiz on my desktop. I don't know why but the people over at the ubuntu forums couldn't figure out what the problem was?

Nevertheless, it is recommendable to disable compiz before running the game, as it will make the client crash (not always, but often) when you minimize the window. It will also greatly improve performance.
