You need the correct drivers for your card.
If you are using NVidia you must use the binary drivers provided from NVidia, not the ones included with Xorg.
The same applies for ATI.

If you are having an Intel graphic card, check this thread: http://regnumonline.com.ar/forum/showthread.php?t=30427

You must understand that almost no new PCs actually come with graphics cards.

Instead they use a fake "graphics card" built into your motherboard, usually Intel. These are called Integrated Graphics Processors (IGP) and are not powerful enough to run any notable 3D games, even if the manufactuers said it was, and in fact they can even slow your system down because they consume valueable system memory for use as graphics memory, because they don't have their own.

This is actually why they are so slow, because no matter how new or fast the graphics processor itself is, system memory is extremely slow compared to dedicated graphics memory.

If your system is a desktop, I recommend buying a dedicated ATI or NVIDIA card that installs into one of the expansion slots in your computer. If your system is a laptop, then you are usually out of luck, and probably shouldn't be trying to use a laptop for games anyway (a common mistake).

As Znurre pointed out, you also need the correct drivers for your graphics card installed and working. This usually includes using proprietary drivers as "open" drivers generally do not offer 3D acceleration.
