Hi all -

Using an ATI Radeon 9550 running on Ubuntu Edgy AMD 64-bit linux. About half the textures in the game show up as white blobs, and the game runs impossibly slow (like 1-2 FPS).
(note: other OpenGL games work fine for me, eg. Unreal Tournament 2004, NWN)

I'll look at my info when I get home tonight and compare to yours. The whole deal with it running like 1-2 FPS makes me wonder if somehow hardware acceleration isn't on or something. :-/

Anyway, hopefully we can troubleshoot it later tonight.

I dual boot with Windows on the same computer, so I did a little experiment - installed Regnum in Windows - exact same hardware - set it to render with OpenGL and got the exact same texture problem. Is there a problem with the OpenGL code and ATI cards, or do I just have to upgrade my Radeon 9550? Like I said, other OpenGL games work fine (but I realize they are a couple years older than Regnum).

(Of course, DirectX works right in my Windows install, but that won't help me with my linux install...)

Actually, ATi seems to have much poorer support for OpenGL relative to nVidia or even... *shudder* Intel. It works, sort of, but ATi cards are designed to handle DirectX, Direct3D et al. nVidia cards do far better with OpenGL and don't perform as well in the area of Direct3D applications. This is where the problem of running ATi cards on a *NIX box comes into play. ATi has never released official Linux drivers, ever (IIRC). The drivers used for ATi/Linux compatibility are generic or made by opensource programmers, who don't have the information, time, or money to make a driver as high-quality as a professional driver. In short, yes, there is a problem with OpenGL and ATi, but a second layer of problems is added when you are stuck with a sub-professional ATi kernel and drivers for Linux. You can test this by running
# glxgears
assuming you have GLX going for your X server (more than likely). You will see three differently colored gears spinning, and the console you entered the command in will display, every five seconds, a count of the frames rendered for the past five seconds and an average FPS for those five seconds. On a GeForce 6600, which may or may not be a comparable GPU, I get 3500 FPS on a typical test of glxgears.

Err...no. Thanks for the reply, I suppose. ATI has been making Linux drivers for at least two years now. I'm using them, and like I said initially, I've been running Unreal 2004 and NWN (both use OpenGL) just fine. Also, like I said in the next post, the Windows drivers do the same thing under OpenGL, so I'm pretty sure it's not the Linux drivers. It's either some kind of texture/shader usage that's unsupported by my Radeon 9550 or it's a bug in the RO code.

I also have the same problem.
I'm using an ATI Radeon x1400 and the game loads fine (except it tries to revert to spanish and occasionally crashes) but a large majority of the textures are just white blobs.
I'm downloading the windows client right now and am going to try it both with my windows partition and with Ubuntu under wine.
I'll post here if I can get it to work either way.
It would be real great to game this working well in linux. There are ALOT of people looking for an OpenGL mmo they can play under linux. LOTS.
Even though I play WoW regularily in linux (under wine) I would gladly give it up for an MMO that had a native linux client. And there are tons of people exactly like me in that regard.

I have the same white blobs (textures missing). I just installed the last ATI drivers (8.34.8).

And Thomas07, please let us know if Regnum under Wine is any good :)

I just tried to run Regnum with Wine and it runs snmootly with all graphics present.

The only problem is that the mouse pointer is not shown, so it is impossible to play.

Same thing here : no textures with the same message related to " error uploading texture ".

Im running on Zenwalk 4.4.1 ( kernel 2.6.20 based on Slackware 11 ) on an ATI Radeon 9800 pro ( lastest drivers proprio 8.35.5 )

ps : just running this game last night to test & ... :bounce: , remember me Everquest 2 ! Im really happy to see a Linux Client , this game will become a great game ! :thumb_up:

I've tried this method , then i was able to get somes textures but when i reload the game , all new textures disappear again :/

I'll tried to erase the game , reinstall & check all updates after the first run ...

OK ! Thats mean to work now but lets go to another topic : the game crash :P

I don't have anymore this problem, but honestly, I don't know the reason, I played until now, I'm a lvl4 mage :)
