Well, here's a completely new way on how to do it.
1) Put a light debian lenny installation on your usb key (one with 4gb should be enough)
2) Add radeon, libgl, mesa, mesa-utils to your lenny instalation
3) check for direct rendering, if not enabled then do this (http://regnumonline.com.ar/forum/showpost.php?p=171072&postcount=7)
4) run regnum and play
only problem is ~30fps max (compared to 50-60 on my win boot it's enormous drop), and following sideffects (at least with my radeon 9600pro, check attachment).
