I've managed to get a free 50 slot voice server for Mohawk Voice. It is a new app, still in beta and so far unfortunately only for windows (linux version should come when it goes out of beta). You can grab Mohawk on this link (http://forums.mohawkvoice.com/showthread.php?t=449) and start using if you already don't have your own voice server. If you need an extra channel just pm me here or on irc, if you want I can password protect it so it's only accessible to you.
Cya there.

What's the benefit of using this app compared to Mumble?

it's kinda similar to vent, just uses less resources.
and in terms of my shitty system games work better/smoother with this then with mumble.
and i'm not a fan of mumble since the sound quality there is awful (at least for me).
anyway, safest way to find out is to download and try out (but i doubt you can do that since you're a tux user and they don't have tux version yet :D)

vent still has much more options tho, at least from my experience. and this is beta, so things might always not go as smooth.
seems it cant work right under linux+wine, and no native linux version ((

yeah, you'll have to wait for version 2.0 to get linux client =/
Mumble will slowly make all the other voice chat tools obsolete.
It has the best architecture, is open source and cross platform.
And for the voice quality, speex is doing really well.

e.g. iLBC is used by Skype.

i doubt it. only if vent devs do a major fuck-up.
Maybe you are right, windows sucks too and people are still using it.

ventrilo doesn't suck, it's just you who sucks since you obviously blindly refuse to use anything that's not open source. mumble compared to ventrilo is still in stone age in terms of quality and everything else.

Thats just plain false, you don't know anything about me.

You _obviously_ don't know the technical details about either Ventrilo or Mumble.

don't need to know technical details that mumble is miles away from being as good and as popular as ventrilo. but you're free to continue living in denial.

First, good does not equal popular.
Second, you are saying "is miles away" while admitting to not know what a mile is.

ok eli, you have a point,
s/miles/kilometres.
but anyway, to clear this up - from my personal experience vent performs better in all segments then mum, and on all platforms i've tested (linux and windows to be more precise). actually, mumble is the software which caused me the most performance issues and which i found hardest to set up for voice sensitivity (i don't use push-to-talk). knowing that, i will continue to use vent instead of mumble.

well a million vs couple of thousands... :D i'd rather take a word of million :D specially since mumble server is free (unlike vent) and still not much popular :D

yeah well, i don't tend to use software that doesn't work good on my system just because it's open source. oh actually, iirc the vent linux client is also open source. :D

I didn't mean to say that you should only use open-source. What I wanted to say is that I think it's weird that you think what the majority uses is great, but still uses Linux.

well, it's not that i didn't try mumble or teamspeak. i just find vent the best at least for me and my system. it's not like i said "oh look, everyone uses vent i'm gonna use too even if it don't work". just a coincidence.

I have to agree with you on those two points, maybe a more lightweight audio codec would be an option for people with weaker Computers, on the voice sensitivity i have to agree too, the gui is lousy in this regard.
But those points don't negate the fact, that mumbles underlying technical aspects are far superior to ventrilo. And with the new version comming up even the network protocol is a lot better, google Protocl Buffers FTW.

Then don't use it as an argument.

nightchill, im of the understanding the owner of the vent code would not be releasing it to open source, and on the vent site it says in development, which it has been for over a year suggesting that a move to open source aint going to happen, i may be wrong, could you point me in the right direction pls
