Seriously, what's wrong with this year? Almost daily we hear reports of aircrafts killing over 100 people or losing parts in the air. Most of the Eastern Europe has been flooded and attacked by hordes of mosquitoes and rats, Now, New Zealand has been struck by an earthquake, followed by incoming tsunami.
It's like tragedy after tragedy specially during last two months

don't tell me it's global climate change cause I don't believe that bullcrap
It looks like the economy crash wasn't bad enough for humanity :P

Er, no seriously its a gay, weird year, it feels slow and just unnatural to me. But 2010 will be even gayer, the crisis will hit its peak when those glasses celebrating the year 2000-2009 go out of business because you can't make a 2nd sunglass lens out of a 1 can you? I think not!

Goodbye,

(P.S: You believe in the global crisis but not in Global Warming? Fear global warming! I haven't had a Christmas with snow for 4 years in a row! And all the snow AKA rain comes in June now like I'm sure you've noticed? EVIL, EVIL, EEEEEVIL!)

Gorden Brown.

That would be Gordon Brown :)

It snowed this winter alright. In Poland it usually snows on Christmas but not every time, that's normal.

I am, for instance, just worried about us, people, cutting costs during aircraft maintenances and risking so many lifes
Same about flooding, it's not first time it happens here and we don't even stop building houses on floodplains

Only few airlines in the world earn money transporting people, most airlines just loose money til they go bankrupt: e.g. in 2000 there was at least 3 french airlines flying from Paris to Toulouse only one surived (Air france).

Nowadays we are in a quite huge Economic crisis, people that use to take airplanes, try not to (to reduce budget). Airlines are loosing a lot of money (British airways asked its employees to work for free for a month). Basically Airlines have to operates their regular flights if they don't want to loose the slots at Airports and can't really increase too much the pricing (it's done using yield management). They reduce costs where they can, i.e. maintenance.

And also you can add the RNG that seems to roll badly lately for Airlines.

I live in America and I blame Washington D.C.. They're screwing up enough stuff in my state as it is.

It's gotta be the earth's magnetic polar shift that's coming, causing crazy metabolic shifts in small animals and screwing with how our technology functions.

It is... Well you should. We are experiencing climate change, which is kinda normal in fact. We've just speeded up the process a bit.

The economic breakdown or whatever is called also was something we could foresee, and taking into account that fixing planes is not cheap at all and pilots have to do extra hours, that would explain most of the problems.

In medieval times, Greenland was green. And it had citruses. That's why it's called GREENLAND. Then mini ice age came :P the climate change, it's not that bad as it was, really. So I don't believe it's caused by us!

No, but +100 years of burning large quantities of fossil fuel did speed up the process a bit. On the other hand, we'll be running out of fuel "soon" (just think about all the legacy tech you should change), and population growth isn't helping.

It's clearly the George W. Bush legacy. Take a look at the number of companies that ran into the ground conveniently just after he left the administration of them, and now he's just left the presidency of the United States. When one thing goes crashing down, all things connected to it are pulled on their tight strings....

(Aranor, your English is just fine! Stop apologising!)

Sadly , Ara you are correct.
The deregulation of pollution producing industry.
Failure to explore alternative power sources and
6 years of Haliburton pumping unmetered stolen oil from Iraq all
products of the "conservative" administration of the last 8 years.
I'm at a loss to see what it was they were conserving. Certainly not
clean air or water.
The question here really is; Would evil men commit global murder to steal
TRILLIONS of dollars?
There is good news though. I am so old I probably wont live long enough to
see the tragic end. (I didnt say it was good news for you)

For them (Banks owners) it's never too easy to make virtual money and then push the guilt on people saying we've made too many debts. When we are born we live in debt already. Look at this (http://blog.redfin.com/seattle/files/2008/08/united_states_one_dollar_bill_obverse.jpg). It says, you pay for your debt :P or at let's say, one pound in GB "I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of one pound"

Come on! How could we be NOT in a crisis? :p what's the point in letting various countries take neverending loans? It's like telling a kid to not eat the candies and leaving it in a candy store all alone.

But still I wasn't really worried about end of the world and climate change, goddammit. I was concerned what's wrong with people lately

I was just concerned about tragedies lately and that people don't learn. One crash happened, Airbus promised to pay more attention to their plane's health, then more accidents happened and now it looks like no one really pushes them to do anything about it. Same with protecting floodplains. People prefer to spend ridiculous amounts of money to pay Kylie Minogue for a concert than to rise anti-flood shafts. (like it happened in Poland).

Godot

Well as to the air industry having so many unscheduled layovers in fields,
oceans and peoples living rooms.... it all comes back to deregulation and
who profits from it.
They like to say its an accident or a mistake, but I say if someone makes a
mistake and it puts money in their pocket;expect them to make that mistake
again and again and again... ad nauseum infinitum. Thats pretty much whats
wrong with people.
Good post though, great to see people thinking and being concerned.

regards

If you read it you can see it happening, everything is in place for a resource war to kick off, with all that oil under the artic and russia, canida, the Usa etc all wanting to claim it as there own tention is high, Russia has been reinforcing its north fleet and flying recon planes very near canadian air space, an estimated 1 trillion barrels I think it was, hugh wars have been faught over far less.

Piz, did you know that most of the southern part of Argentina has been bought by European and American private corporations and people, and most of the rivers and lakes have been closed by those corporations?

I don't think there will be a resource war. War calls for proper founding, soldiers and more resources. It isn't profitable.

Beware of the Unix Epoch! If we don't move to a 64 bit CPU architecture by 2038 we will have some serious problems with legacy programs. Especially, ye olde COBOL accounting and banking systems (those are older than the dinosaurs!).

Simple things make Apocalypse more funny. Nuclear mayhem? Too expensive. A terrorist organization spreading a lethal virus, genetically engineered to kill millions? Too complex. An extinct, prehistoric and hippie civilization that foresees the end of the world in 2012? We have enough with all those "natural healthy products", thanks. A software bug may be Y2K-ish, but I promise this is gonna be a good remake!

On a serious note: most of the desktop computers will be x86-64 a lot before 2038. The problem are those old behemoths whose programmers are now dead (caffeine overdose, it happens) or retired.

{{Citation needed}}

Generally Air Transport people present the figures their ways. Like the ratio of death by distance done. However it's a fraud to intelligence to do so. Aircraft are not done to cover same distances than cars. When you take the ratio of death by hours of transport, then aircraft is just slightly better than car, and I guess this year it's not even the case.

As someone who studied a bit Air Traffic bullshits, I really can't believe thoses bullshit talk about aircrafts being safe. Aircraft industry is fragile, and in time of crisis I won't believe it's safe.

Granted, Aircrafts are fragile, and in times of crisis the thing gets worse. I think you would like to see the movie "Whiskey Romeo Zulu", the accident of the flight Lapa 3142 (lv-wrz). Another interesting crash was flight Austral 2553 (lv-weg).

But still, I feel safer flying on a plane than driving.
