What was your first thought when you played Regnum?

I had heard so much about WoW, have been told how awesome it is, it is the phenomenon sweeping the globe, Ozzy advertizes for em, along with Capt Kirk, lol.... and its FREE? Open source ROCKS!

Pretty much stayed like that, till quests disappeared and i got into the WZ.

Now I think quite seriously about nuinstalling completely, and diggind out my old pencil/paper and dungeon dice.

Wow, a huge world where I can have wars with loads of other people and can advance my character.(Regnum Online is the only MMORPG I ever played, except for some hours of Perfect World) In my imagination the WarZone was much bigger than it really is. :)

I read about the game in the ubuntuusers.de forum like 3 years ago.
When I started I was totally amazed by the whole game. Of course the linux client gave bonus points.
I never thought that I actually will like mmorpgs. But the game proved me wrong :D

Despite all my complaining about Regnum and NGD it's still a game I love to play.

I was constantly getting lost in initiation zone cos my sense for orientation in virtual-3d is practically nonexistant.
I liked the idea of playing and getting back to some spanish practice.

Oh and i thought that gfx doesnt really matter, though actually my fps used to be better back then...with more details.

But what kept me playing was that i liked the pace of the game: its not stress to play and usually gives you some seconds to consider not just to react. Except when theres lag ofc.

All in all, it was about to be the best free game ever... sometimes I still believe in it... lately I don't (and it's not for the graphics).

True - Regnum is not open source.

I only run Linux. I was considering WoW, but refuse to run Windows anywhere and didn't want to run another application under Wine. If companies can't produce a native Linux client, then I'll not bother with them. Simple as that. My hatred for all things microsoft is far greater than my desire for any other software (I also hate Apple, but less)!

First impressions:

August 2008 - Wow, this is really in-depth and involving! Killing a few dumb monsters is obviously leading on to something far more complex and exciting.

The map is massive and its really scary venturing into the unknown with so many 'impossible' mobs, that seem to attack you for no apparent reason, other than you've strayed too close to them! :looking:

Oh... nice - monsters don't follow you for ever! ;)

Pay attention to the quests, write everything down, because it might be important! (I have about 10 A4 pages of notes, character positions, etc, from when I first started playing!)! Hahah - what a dumbass! lol!

September 2008 - bumped into AwD, who explained the benefit of using staff mastery - I always wondered how some mages managed to killl mobs quicker than I did!

September/October 2008 - Second impresion: (Attacking Herb @ L27) This is really exciting, almost like a real fight in the street.... adrenaline pumping and all that, but OMG! WTF is going on!? :eek:

Discovered group grinding! Wow - you really can level a LOT faster when there's a few of you!

October 2008: Third impresisons: Grinding sucks the ball-rot off dead mans underpants :sleep_1: ...totally boring, but I wanted to get my mage to 50, so I carried on.

October/November 2008: I felt it necessary to buy some scrolls to reward NGD, as I really liked the game and because each time I went into the wz with a higher level, it became so much more fun and playable!

November 2008: Finallt graduated. Well worth it in the end! :D

What? Only Spanish? And why is 80% of NPC chat-boxes a bugged quest like:
No habla español, muerta [err_some_item], embes, wtf. [err_something_else] somos pocos.

No, I still can't speak spanish.. and yes, when I started playing it was "only" Spanish - at least 90% - and most things were bugged. Apart from that, it was a lot like Znurre's experiences: the world was so big and confusing (no map), and I just had to see it all!

RO is the best (and tbh the only , well PW, but its too, bleh really) MMORPG ive played.

Hmm, a game where i can make a character, turn him into an uber knight, buy a big shield and awesome looking armor, protect my land and wage war against 2 other rival nations through epic fort and castle fights and then invade their homelands and steal gems to unlock a portal where i find a giant dragon........ AWESOME :D

Loved it as soon as I started playing :wub2: the mobs, all those unexplored lands, the quests (yes, i actually followed the stories and thought all that was awesome xD)...

2 things that imediatelly came to my mind when i started playing: "I'll get to 50 in no time", and "omg i'll never talk to anyone in realm chat, that's so geek and i'm way too embarassed to do that"... I wonder how all that went down the drain...

Lol, sorry about the really short quote but this is basically what I thought at first.

I always considered MMORPGS to be games played by complete idiots, WoW kiddies, no-lifers with absolutely no social skills, bearded fat dudes who live in their parent's basement, etcetera (Don't get too mad now, it gets better)

And still I gave it a go, without really knowing why. I was bored, had nothing much to do and wanted to at least try it out and see my prejudices confirmed. I chose Regnum because it was free, linux friendly and I had read something about it on some blogs (with my usual dosage of skepticism).

At first, it was exactly what I thought it would be. Although the questing and lvling up was kind of fun. Realm chat was filled with idiots (I actually switched back and forth from Alsius to Syrtis and back to Alsius because of it).

Gradually I met some people in game who didn't seem to be complete retards, had a life beyond the game and we're just cool people who all happened to play the same game (and some were even really female \o/ ).

That and the urge to get to lvl 50 asap, the everlasting quest for IMBA items (still looking for my epic +7 const, + 150 HP, +150 mana Medusa btw), and the way war was played just got me hooked to the game.

Finally, there's the 'beta feel' this game still has. We all complain about the nerfs, the crashes and the bugs. And most of the time with reason. However, the recurring question "What will they change (aka nerf) now?" is kind of addictive as well.
