Hi! Yesterday I was trying changing configs looking raise the performance (I have not success :()
In my case, appeared this screen when in my kernel I put as built-in (*), in Device Drivers -> Graphics Support:
(*) Direct Rendering Manager blabla
-> (*) Intel 830M, 845G, 852M, 855GM, 865G
-> (*) i915 driver
I think the problem goes away when I did change all of them into (M).
I hope this help. Be nice with the kernel :P
ps:
nacho@localhost /usr/src/linux $ uname -r
2.6.31-gentoo-r6

Did you take a look into your kernel config?
paste this into console and post the output:
cat /usr/src/linux/.config | grep DRM
(print the content of the kernel's config file filtering strings containing "DRM")

Great.
add the kernel's damn problem :P if you set up driver intel as built-in, problem appear, if you put it as module, problem goes away.
May be it require some test to confirm
