View Full Version : Memory problem and slow-down

Hi,
I realized that Regnum uses about 1 GB of memory and slows down to about 25 FPS at Ubuntu Linux 10.04 LTS (also at Ubuntu Linux 9.10).
In consideration to windows (approximately 400 MB of memory , runs with opengl at 50 FPS) it is more than double of memory usage of Regnum at Ubuntu!
I use the same game.cfg at both Operating Systems.
My System:
AMD Sempron 2200+ (1,5Ghz)
1GB RAM DDR333
WinXP Prof x86 SP3 & Ubuntu Linux 10.04 x86
Nvidia Geforce 7900GS AGP 512MB (driver 195.36.24 at Ubuntu Linux 10.04 and driver 197.13 at WinXP)
Why regnum uses a huge amount of memory and slows down at Ubuntu Linux?
I hope that problem will be fixed as fast as possible.
PS: I suppose that Regnum doesn't use compressed textures at Ubuntu, but my grafics card and the Nvidia driver for Linux support it.
thx,
Ash

I'm not 100% sure but it could be that its the new characters because they use more memory, although you can still give windows a chance but maybe you just need more RAM?
I run windows with a similar system but my graphic card is worse lol and i still have problems with 1GB RAM DDR2. I just upgraded to 2GB yesterday but I havent tested it as yet cause I'm waiting for my power cord to be shipped here >.< but imo I think maybe you really only need more RAM.

Yes, my problem appears since the character upgrade.
My PC is old and DDR(1) memory is too expensive.
I don't understand why Regnum runs better at WinXp with more FPS and less memory usage:
WinXP:
Memory: ca. 400 MB
FPS: 40-50
Ubuntu:
Memory: ca. 1000 MB
FPS: 15-25
I'm forced to play regnum at WinXP.
But I'm not the only one with this problem, some friends at Niflheim have the same problem, too and they have better PCs than my PC.

This is correct, the game uses 350-400MB of memory under Windows for me, and up to 1.5GB on Linux.
The highest I've ever seen it in Windows was 700MB after many hours.
As for the slowdown, here is a list of NGD's (apparent) priorities:
NVIDIA, Windows, DirectX: Very high
ATI, Windows, DirectX: High
Intel, Windows, DirectX: Low
NVIDIA, Linux, OpenGL: Medium
ATI, Linux, OpenGL: Low
Intel, Linux, OpenGL: Very low
This is kind of funny because I would imagine most players of this game are on Linux.
Kind regards.

Cause Ubuntu Lucid uses the latest Nvidia driver (195 series) which sucks on Regnum.
Try to revert back manually to 190.53. It works fine.

At least, you will get playable fps, but no impact on memory.

@ _Nel_ thank you for this tipp now regnum runs better - not very good - but playable :thumb:
I'm using 190.x on Ubuntu (64 bits) and experiencing a major non permanent slow down issue since character update (things are even worse since 1.6), see http://www.regnumonline.com.ar/forum/showthread.php?t=61225 for details.

I can confirm this with
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Mobile IntelŪ GM45 Express Chipset GEM 20100328 2010Q1
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.8.1
GNU/Linux Debian (Linux 2.6.33 and 2.6.34)
RO uses 2GB memory and 300Mb of Swap
Max 30FPS only when sitting and not moving camera, otherwise lower
Many of my friends left game, because of performance issues.

but when you do a game that you want to put on mass market, windows compatibility is #1 priority.
oh and, intel gfx cards are not made for gaming or any kind of work that requires gpu usage. people who bought those cards on computers that they wanted to use for gaming deserve the consequences imo.
ngd should just completely drop support for intel cards and put their resources they had there to some thing more important.
