i refuse to start a new thread, so:

i have installed openal but it doesn't work this is what i get while loading RO from a terminal:
$ regnum-online
AL lib: pulseaudio.c:612: Context did not connect: Connection refused
AL lib: pulseaudio.c:612: Context did not connect: Connection refused
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
AL lib: alsa.c:512: Could not open playback device 'default': Device or resource busy
AL lib: oss.c:169: Could not open /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy

yeah i do not use pulseaudio and i refuse to do so, but alsa should work just fine. any ideas?

This can happen sometimes with ALSA, usually a reboot fixed the problem for me.

I don't know if openal supports Jack.
A simple Google search didn't yield any positive results...

I had a problem with something stealing my audio device a while ago, but can't for the life of me remember what it was... I keep thinking it might have been esd. My solution was to disable it. What's in your process list?

Is Regnum the only app not being able to output sound ? afair you have to install alsa-plugins and edit asound.conf to make ALSA play nice with jack. (could depend on the distro, not sure thought...)

yeah. RO is the onnly app along with flash that doesn't have sound

but i wonder if i can get RO to run nice and smooth with jack like everything else

The OpenAL distributed with Linuxes since about 2009 is really OpenAL Soft...
Official site, docs are in the source (http://kcat.strangesoft.net/openal.html)

I have no problem with regnum and openal at Ubuntu Linux 11.04 ;)

ArchLinux

it appears that the problem isn't with the distro itself but somewhere between jack audio kit and opelal

Try this once...

Open your terminal.
sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio

Restart PC.

Pulseaudio is BS with most games.

To reinstall.
sudo apt-get install pulseaudio

Restart PC.
