View Full Version : Stuck In Ubuntu Hell...

This seemed like the most appropriate place to put this. Feel free to move it, powers-that-be, if not.

So. I'm a PC; I'm not proud of that fact, but there you have it.

At any rate, I'm trying to install Ubuntu Studio for a client who wants it (I don't know why, exactly; one would assume he wants to do video/audio editing).

First attempt; failed just after the part where I select the 4 software packages for video/audio editing

Second attempt; see 'First attempt'

Third attempt; see 'Second attempt'

Forth attempt; Bought new DVD burner, changed DVDs, downloaded Ubuntu Studio (from .torrent this time); see 'third attempt'

Fifth attempt; replaced hard drive, motherboard, RAM, processor, and the by now cold coffee on my desk; see 'forth attempt'

Sixth attempt; decided to just install Ubuntu and get the packages after-the-fact. Ubuntu now installed, and have literally no idea how to get the stuff I need on there.

I found this link;

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ubuntu%20Studio%20Installation

...and have been attempting to follow it (since the 4 things on the bottom of the page are what I need), but I seriously don't get it. Like, not just a little confused, but full-blown, Water Boy confused.

I just want to install those damned things, and I know that it shouldn't be as difficult as I am making it, but it is completely eluding me.

The reason I am posting this here is twofold;

1. I know for a fact that RO users, at least most, are some of the smartest people ever placed on this planet by spaceships that kind of look like DC-8s
2. I'm out of ideas.

So, if anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, I would really appreciate it.

I'm at the point where changing my name to Teltax Gulambait, moving to Iceland, and raising Ninja Attack Pidgeons is no longer totally out of the question.

I need a more detailed description of the errors and failures. It may be just because you're having problems retrieving the packages from the repository, or maybe you have the wrong repos set up.

Anyway, from a plain Ubuntu installation, just do:

sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude install ubuntustudio-desktop ubuntustudio-audio ubuntustudio-audio-plugins ubuntustudio-graphics ubuntustudio-video linux-rt

That's from the terminal (ctrl + alt + t, or alt+f2 and type gnome-terminal).

You can use Synaptic too (System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager). Just search these names:

ubuntustudio-desktop
ubuntustudio-audio
ubuntustudio-audio-plugins
ubuntustudio-graphics
ubuntustudio-video
linux-rt

Double click on each one to mark them, and click on the green tick button to apply the changes.

Yeah, it can get a bit hairy for newcommers. Ubuntu should come with video tutorials.

Thanks for the suggestions, AW. I've already tried the 'sudo apt get goflickyournutbagyoudirtywindowsxpuser' stuff, but to no avail. Gonna try the Syn-whatever thing tomorrow.

@Piz; glad to help. Maybe if these install failures continue, I can make a good series out of it;

TRAPPED IN HELL;
The Amazingly True Story of an XP User Who Can't Figure This Crap Out

OR....

GOIN' POSTAL, AFK;
The Real Story Behind The Ubuntu Studio/Disney Store Massacre

EDIT; the amount of help I am getting with this so far is truly amazing. I wish there were enough hours in the day to write to you all individually to say thanks.

Basically, what happens is this; the install would get to the point of failing to install software, and when I proceed to install the bootloader, it fails too.

The basic install of Ubuntu goes OK, but for studio, there is a part where 4 optional software packages come up, and if I select even one of those, the install fails. I now have Ubuntu installed, and am hoping to use the suggestions many of you have sent me to get this done.

I wish I could explain it better than that :(

BTW; the bit about the amazing help I'm getting was not sarcasm; you guys should see all the craziness in my inbox.

Sorry if it came off as sarcasm; it really wasn't.

Hahaha, it's ok then... :P

Don't you have any piece of paper or anything at hand to copy the error message?

A couple of things to list as well when having these sorts of issues first is:

1. What hardware setup are you using:
a. Desktop or Laptop
b CPU/Motherboard
c. What memory and type
d. How many hard drives are connected and type
e. What type of network cards

2. When in Live CD for regular Ubuntu
a. Is the network card working
b. Does it see the hard drive you want to install on as being SDA or HDA

Many times with installation problems across a variety of linux distros 1.d. and 2.b. is what gives people some problems because alternate boot loaders sometimes don't translate between selecting SATA and PATA very well.

Are you using a laptop with one hard drive? A desktop with multiple drives? Whatever drive you will be using for the install, leave that one connected and disconnect the others if using multiple drives. That may help the alternate installer that Ubuntu Studio uses and should alleviate a failure when installing Grub.

Getting a step by step screen shot (even from a cell phone) and (as Arctic pointed out) some error messages would help.

Against all odds, against the merciless vengence of the universe itself; Ubuntu Studio is now installed. :) I'm still unsure where the initial problems came from, but basically, using the advise you have all given me, I installed plain old Ubuntu, then went back and installed the Studio programs seperately. It's now running like it should!

Thanks to the following people who sent me advice and guidance;

Froste

Syd_Vicious
GythaOgg

Also, a big thanks to the people that decided to send me helpful links to my actual email account, plus some guy who sent me guidance (no idea how) to my Facebook. You guys have made my life so much easier these past 2 days, and I just don't think there would be a working OS without you all.

...and a special thank you to the red karma sender. I know that I don't know Linux from a hole in the ground, but the comment 'hahahaha, fail, n00b' was sure appreciated. I actually got a good chuckle out of that, so thanks.

Again, thanks to you all!

Hope the person you installed it for has fun with it, also if they want to use it as an audio recording device for music compilation they maybe interested in switching to the real time kernel.

Check the packages I put in one of my previous replies, linux-rt is already there ;)
