Well like the title says I need some help,
As my laptop crashed last week I started using my Computer again but it's on windows Vista, I want to replace it with Windows 7 but don't really know how to do this and I was hoping someone could help me. How can I get Windows 7 on my computer.. and do I have to delete my whole harddisk?
I really hope someone can help me.
Regards.

For a start you have to get windows 7 instalation disk (can be practically any storage media, but CD/DVD is the most common), valid licence key for windows 7 (yes, it is possible to run illegal windows, but let's not go into that ;)) and you have to backup all your data (as far as I know, updating vista to win 7 does require disk formatting.
Alternatively, you could go to local pc store, where they should be able to install win 7 for you for a small fee (Usually you purchase the os from them). Usually they also install the drivers etc. so you don't need to worry about that stuff (Especially if you don't know your way around installing os).
I hope this helps you a bit ;)
Kharbon is right in that you need the installation media. Once you purchase this media (DvD) it will come with the license key.
Have a look at this link. Hopefully it will provide you with the info you are looking for.

Okay thanks guys but lets say, I don't have the legal version. And I just want to delete my Whole Harddisk how do I do this.
And besides that, I haven't installed Windows 7 before so does anyone know if it gives you a trial 30 days if you dont have the license key yet.. like Windows XP does? Or does it say that you have to insert the license key directly or else you won't be able to install Windows 7?

ShotHunt, there is medias called "Live[CD/USB/DVD]" with alternative OS that you can run without installing it on your computer. Get one of it, learn how to use it and then use some tools like GParted or QtParted to format your Hard Drive and clean it from his dirty OS.

If your vista isn't old, you can upgrade to windows 7 without data loss.

Oh the memories. I still remember the RAM eating, and those damn updates that broke my sound drivers every time and changed nothing. Vista is utter shit, I got tired of it and moved on to 7 as well, which is slightly less annoying. Again, the updates are the only things that bother me, though there is better update handling in 7.
Like was said either buy an installation disk yourself (comes with instructions duh), pay someone to install it (they do it for you), or find a pirated version which usually has easy to follow instruction as well.
As for the nitty gritty, yes, you have the option of wiping your entire hard drive or leaving things the way they are. Either way always do backups on CD's. If your computer has multiple hard drives then I know some people like to leave the Windows and System folders on one drive and all the rest on the other. Makes it really easy to do a fresh clean install so you can wipe the HDD with Vista files and choose to install 7 there. But people organize things differently always, that's just how I do it :cuac: The bottom line is, you don't need to delete anything manually yourself, just run the installation disk and you'll have all the option there, you can start clean, with old files, whatever you want.
Another tip is simply to use another computer in the process if you're not sure, so that you can always double check instructions. Once again, backups are always handy too just in case, though you should do regular backups every so often anyway.
Like Tiger said, after 30 days the trial period will end, and if you're running a pirated version you'll need to find a way to validate it falsely. The tools for all this crap are usually found together in pirated versions anyhow.

I would, I have heard alot of positive things about Linux.. but it's just that I'm not the only user of my computer and Linux doesn't work with alot of programs.. Regnum is one of a kind because it actually supports linux so yeah :/

Too bad this isn't an option. i have to delete my Avira antivirus but I did.. like a year ago, I'm not able to delete this Avira thing and I have to if I want to upgrade to windows 7. So I would eventually have to format everything.

.....
Lol +1, I would defenitely choose XP above Vista damn, when I called the dutch Windows service line for some problems they seriously recommended me to buy windows 7 and upgrade it for a low price, too bad I didn't accept it. Anyway it sucks yes, but do I understand this right? You said in your post that if I put the pirated disk in my computer while its running on Vista and I didn't do anything with it.. I can just let it do its thing? I thought you had to format your whole Harddisk before you were able to do this... nice
LFS ahaha, you want him to suicide? He don't even know what is a kernel =)
XD Kernel? That's the same as a core right? Nope I don't really know much about that hehe.

Damn this sounds like an awful lot of work, wouldn't it be faster if I would just format it and use the pirated CD?
Yes it give you trial 30 days
Awesome, like I thought

Correct, you don't have to do much of anything besides picking the right installation location, it will format and clean everything like new if that's what you want. Just burn the installation files to a CD, boot from CD on start up, or just start it up like any other program and it will restart and begin installation on it's own. I recommend a complete wipe of everything, just make backups of the things you want and putting them on a USB drive, CD, whatever. Your computer will be like new and will be running miles ahead of Vista in speed.

Put 7 on a friends PC not long ago, its a painless procedure almost as easy as installing ubuntu. Back up your data first though, the formating stage of the install (for a new installation of 7, not for an update from vista) wipes everything with a single click and no confirmation. If this happens and you lose important data you can shut down the PC at that stage and a geek can get your data back.
A lot of folks see no reason to switch from XP to 7, I disagree. 7 is a much improved system with better multitasking, memory management and security, I would even say (begrudgingly and with gritted teeth) that it's worth the price. Would still say 'use linux' to anyone with even a small amount of technical competence or 'get a mac' to an average windows user first though ;)
Whatever you do, exorcise that... thing... that claims to run from your PC. Your phone has a better system, even if your phone is a brick from the 1990's.

Ok so I finally got the CD today the guy who gave it to me told me before I did everything I had to set the CD Disk first in the Bios... or something like that? Does anyone know what he meant by saying this and how I do this? On vista..

When you boot up there should be something like 'press f12 for boot options' on the screen. If its not there and you have a logo, image or something like that you may have to hit a button to hide that and get the bios screen. Usually suspects are del, tab, esc and function keys. When you get the boot device menu select the cd/dvd.
If nothing like this is coming up post the make and model of your PC and I'll have a look at the manual.

Yeah when I start it up the Bios opens with the F12 key, then it gives me a small list of around 8 things above eachother.. the second one is CD/DVD (something) should I press enter on it? Cause I did, then it started the computer just like it always does, thats it? Or should something come up.

It's unlikely you need to go all the way into the bios configuration, there should be an option to select boot device straight after you power up the PC. Usually on the bottom of the screen.
EDIT the 'list of 8 things' doesn't sound like boot device options, you would have about 5 options at most. Could be that is your boot device options and the CD isn't being read though. Usual device options would be something like hard disk, cd/dvd. usb, lan

Yeah sorry that's what I meant that's exactly what it says. And when I press on it with enter, it just starts the computer like it usually does. Does this mean I'm good to go? Or..

Ok, sounds like it cant read the cd. Boot up normaly and put the cd in the drive, if you cant open it up in windows then thats your problem, could be the disk, could be your cd drive.
If you can open it in windows then you should be able to boot from it, no guarantee though.. If you have an xp or ubuntu cd try and boot from that using the same option. You can get ubuntu here if you have the bandwidth and a cd burner:
