Phoronix has been saying this for years... I hope this time it's not a hoax...

Anyways Steam is only a game download manager, not a guarantee that games will be ported to Linux, especially since Linux is not DRM friendly...

It is no hoax. Left4dead will be ported and it is already running fine on linux.

In part, what has taken so long is that Valve's management structure is rather flat. Anyone there is free to work on with what they wish without needing to report directly to managers assigning them with tasks, etc. There has been developers working on the Linux support for sometime, but not until recently has Gabe Newell become personally involved with the Linux client work. In fact, his desk is currently in the current Valve Linux development camp!

And in case you didn’t know, Gabe Newell is awesome. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPjFavgKO5I)

Canonical also started talk with Valve about Steam for Ubuntu. If they make a deal, that would be a great move not only for Ubuntu but for Linux world in general. I wonder if Desura will stay after Steam comes.

Porting steam on linux != porting all games in steam on linux, rite?
Problem isn't in steam but in games themselves.
However porting steam (if it's true xD) might be good reason for porting stuff on GNU/Linux.

Porting Steam doesnt mean porting all games too, true. Steam is a distribution system, and having its stable and usable Linux client is a good sign for game devs to start thinking of porting / making games for Linux, which is also a great news for users. Afaik Left4Dead is in porting process (and according to some news is already in usable state). The problem where Valve called in community devs for help is gfx problems it needs to solve so games can work normally if they have openGL supported. While it is still a small step, once this is settled down, this would be hopefully a great start for Linux gaming expansion.

Aww yeah!

I just need Starcraft 2 to run natively then, and Microsoft never sees me again. xD

Surak, I’ll be disappointed if Bunch of Heroes won’t run on Linux. :3

First benefits of this:

That’s like, what, 10% more performance? Wow! Seems I have to buy a Nvidia card soon. Oh why doesn’t sc2 run on linux…

How big is the improvement in Regnum?

Porting Steam to Linux = You can talk to all your gamer buddies about games you cant play but they can.

I have no problems running Starcraft 2 in wine-multimedia, so Microsoft doesn't ever see me anyway. :P

I have, wine sound either lags behind by ~1 second or it blocks everything else from using the sound device, which kinda sucks since I want to play with skype. :-/
