Happened to me twice in the past. Either conditional is if HP<0 then dead or whats more likely in this game they use reals, where integers shoud be used, noticed in many cases.

See, zero is very special and differs from other numbers in such odd ways, that some think it even isn't a number.
To do justice to an almost philosophical number, NGD decided to set 0 hp synonymical to the small path between life and death. Everything can happen when you're in this state. You laughed hard, and this could mean you sensed Nirvana - since this is why Buddha smiles.
