Free software question
Ok so I've been a big free software nut for years now and was wondering about something. Out of the people here that run Gnu/Linux how many of you have second thoughts about running proprietary software on your Gnu/Linux system? Regnum is proprietary, do you have any issues with that? Also do you run other proprietary software on your system? Just want to get an idea how this community feels about such things.

I do not have any problems with running non-opensource software on my computer, however I wish that Regnum was opensource to speed up development.

Same as Znurre.
Both models should live together.

I wish every bit of software that I ran on my PC was GPL'ed. But that can't happen, not right now. The PC is a tool, and if I can't do my work with GPL software, I'll use what is needed, regardless of licence. That goes for games as well, games are meant to amuse me, if a game is GPL'ed but doesn't amuse me, I won't play it. And vice versa, like with RO, if a game amuses me, I'll play it, even if it's not GPL'ed.
Hurd instead of Linux!

For me, I really love free (as in freedom) software. Almost everything I run is free. I think the only two exceptions from that rule are games and certain drivers needed to make my hardware work the way I want it too. I really hope that NVIDIA will release documentation for their cards soon, so that Noveau finally gets gaming-performance for my/all cards. I hate that I'm not good enough at developing and testing to contribute myself. But I'm trying to learn something (Python atm) so that I can contribute more to the lovely FOSS-community!
Actually, certain software related to my education are not free. We are using GNU/Linux at school but some software, such as Matlab (Octave is not always an option) and LabVIEW, are proprietary. |

I'm a big enthusiast of Free/Libre Open Source Software, but sometimes that strategy doesn't work. Even if it's an excellent idea, it's not a panacea. As DjupaTanken said, sometimes we just have to get used to closed source apps, like Matlab or Wolfram Mathematica. Just as Miraculix said: the computer is just a tool, and I'm trying to use whatever it needs to make it work. I try to choose f/loss when suitable. Otherwise, I use closed source apps the least I can, or try to make my own tools. PS: Unfortunately, HURD will never be completed. I just want the friggin' QNX to be GPL! Realtime, Fault-resistant, stable, hyper-fast and simple.

I try to be very strict about closed source software and rather use open sourced alternatives.
The few exceptions i make are either because they are superior (i.e. opera) or because theres no choice if you dont want to miss a lot of features (i.e. nvidia drivers) .... or regnum |
