Question General Questions About The Game Client

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this.

So I am downloading the Regnum game client right now. I am on dialup @ 28.8K. I cannot get any better connection where I live. I have played a lot of other online games on dialup and have only had minimal problems. The biggest problem I have are game updates.

So I am basically asking what the updates for Regnum are like, such as are there big files 50-100MB+ I have to download on each update or are they only a few MB each(1-10MB)?

Also is the Regnum online playable on dialup? Such as will the connectivity be somewhat stable? I really don't want to spend a lot of time getting everything downloaded, and I log in and lose connection soon after.

My current system specs are:
2Gigs of RAM
2.4 Ghz processor
ATI X1650 Pro 512MB Video card.

Thanks.

I'm sorry but I really don't think this is going to be playable with that connection...

Games I've played with dialup and the game play was indeed play-able:

Runescape
World of Warcraft
Guild Wars
San Andreas Multiplayer
GunZ
Gunbound
Wurm Online
Diablo 2
FlyFF
Soldier Front
Soldat
Counter Strike 1.5

Thanks for the input, but what about my other question?

Well, the game's updates are rather big: There's a 15-ish megabyte update to the client and then lots of resources, which go up to the 100's of MBs sometimes. It's particularly slow even on my connection (100mbps) because of the huge demand on patch release, but for 28.8kpbs... that's gonna be hell.

As far as traffic during gameplay, if you really wanna try it out, I recommend you enable the option "Download all resources at once" in the client settings. This will force the client to download all the resources the first time it is started, which will take forever, believe me. But it's gonna make gameplay better since there will be little resource downloading in-game. There should be NO resource downloading in-game but the dload-all-at-once feature is kinda broken. Expect your connection to be choked when a resource is being downloaded in game.

Now, when there is no resource downloading during gameplay, the game MIGHT be playable... But I really doubt it. You can always try

Well instead of the client downloading the resources, would there be a way to direct download or torrent? Right now I am using the Torrent download for the client which will be done in about 6 hours give or take. Would there be a way to torrent the resources? Right now if I dial in at 28.8K I can usually download 100-120MB per 12 hour period(Connection automatically drops after 12 hours). I have the connection automatically redial after the connection is dropped.

What I am talking about is what I did in Wurm Online. I downloaded the client and installed it, then separately downloaded the "Packs" (Resources in Regnums case). When I ran Wurm it used the packs as if it downloaded them from the client. I did this because when I used the client to DL the packs, it had a nasty habit of failing, in which the download would start all over again, so I manually downloaded the packs.

Despite what some people think, besides the limited bandwidth the connection is fairly reliable in terms of latency. In GunZ I usually had around 90-300 ping depending on how many people was in the game, rarely was I booted because of connection failure. While that is nearly unplayable with some FPS games, I found that lag in most MMORPGs rarely made the game unplayable. So far the only game that I found completely unplayable was Rohan:Blood feud, as I would be in game for maybe 5-10 seconds and would lose connection.

In terms of downloading, I don't really mind waiting long periods of time for patching, as long as I can enjoy the game.

One of my friends played on Dial-Up, its playable, but you need to really wait a long time for the resources, and its horrible after an update. Generally if you get lag it won't be from your internet connection, and when resources are loaded you will be able to play fine, but if you die for example you will need to load resources again or when you teleport through a gate.

The biggest thing for my friend was downloading the client, I just put it on a flashdrive for him. You can download it from a torrent though piece by piece. You can't download the resources seperatly, they are downloaded the first time and after each update via the client, and then after that you need to wait on loading them.

Like I said, resources are loaded when you die, go through a gate, change characters, or are logging into the game. It was fine for my friend after that and he could play after it was done loading. You might get quite a bit of positional lag in narrow places though.

Only one way to find out, not much to lose besides time :P I was playing Runescape on Dial-Up about 5 years back, I remember how it was, it sucks, but you get used to it, and lag isn't really a problem, I just occasionaly lost connection. In terms of Regnum you should be fine, just I think you might have to wait a bit for resources and you may lose connection sometimes.

P.S. Get broadband :P check it out, because its usually cheaper or the same price as dial up, you can use a phone and internet at the same time too. Just I remember its not always available everywhere.

Can't get DSL where I live, and satellite is extortion in my opinion. I tried using my cell phone as a proxy and getting near DSL speed, except that At&t charged me 10 bucks per MB, which ended up in a 930$ bill. I ended up calling At&t about it and got the bill reduced to 100 bucks.

Anyways. So say I start out and go through a portal, it has to load the resources to continue. Say later on I go through the same portal, is it cached so I don't have to "download" the resources again? I'm thinking its similar to how Guild Wars works. Unless that is not correct.

Yeah its like that, once the resources are downloaded you don't need to redownload them again, unless there is a hotfix or small tweak you might download 1 or 2 things from the web.

Its a bit different from GW when it comes to the death system, when you die in Regnum you will be teleported back to the location you saved at, and unless you die right infront of the altar or save point where you will respawn instantly without loading like in GW, you will usually have to reload resources. In Regnum there are 3 zones, a beginner zone, a normal zone, and the warzone (where 3 realms clash) there is a gate connecting each of these areas, and whenever you pass through you will have to load resources.

In GW you just load up more because each city and map is on a different server, Regnum is a persistant world so you don't need to load anything when you come into a new city or area. Thats the difference, but in a sense it works the same way, once its downloaded you just load it the next time. Its similar to GW though really, I think in Regnum you might find less loading (unless you die alot, but there are more resources to load too) since each "zone" is loaded all at once including all the cities and maps in that zone, and there are 3 zones.

Well one of the mods has unofficially uploaded a resources archive for direct download:

Regards,
And I think there has not been another patch since, so these should be up-to-date. That's about all there is so if that doesn't work you'll have to suffer the dload through the client

I appreciate the link to the resources, only problem is the 300+ Meg file download is more then I can download at one time, and DF doesn't allow the continuation of interrupted files. I'll probably just load what I can from the client, and if I get the chance download the .exe at another time.

Thanks
