Unsupported Video Card
Hi there. I've decided to give this game a try but am having a problem. When I launch Regnum I get the following:
Code:
X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 169 Major opcode: 145 Minor opcode: 3 Resource id: 0x0 Failed to open device X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 169 Major opcode: 145 Minor opcode: 3 Resource id: 0x0 Failed to open device |

solution? perhaps a cheap nvidia card, even a 7300GT will be about 6x faster then the intel chip and give you full OpenGL2.0 compliance in hardware, the cards in the 8000 series will with next year's update to OpenGL3.0 will have feature parity with directx 10, and cards like the 8600GT can be had for around $110 on sale, which is faster then the sub $100 8500GT.
Intergrated graphics chipsets are never good for gaming, ever try putting Doom 3 on a mobo with nvidia 6150 graphics built in? Totaly unplayable at minimum possible settings, you'll be lucky to get 20fps, with nothing going on, with drops into the single digits once you start fighting. For smooth gaming yo want to be able to hold 30fps in game. A decent card like a 7600GT or beter should let you max out most linux games, hell, you should be able to run regnum at max everything at your monitors top resolution with a little overhead for some antiasailing and ansiostropic filtering. Read the wiki on what those do for image quality. Really every non work only computer out there needs a dedicated gpu, it really sucks that the matx standard doesn't have and enthusiest grade mobos right now, the only recent one I rememer was a biostar board for socket 939 that had an NForce 4 SLi chipset.

Thanks for the reply DuoMaxwell. I was afraid the answer would be something like this. I'm not much of a gamer, but when I find something I like I will play for a long time. Looks like I will have to wait for a bit to try this game out. My first priority is more RAM, then a new video card. Cheers.

I got an extra message with this error
"there are three possible causes for this error: 1. your video card is too old 2. you haven't installed the latest available drivers 3. you haven't installed the latest directx version" nr. 3...not really nr. 2? well it's worth a try...new drivers don't cost you anything wait for an ubuntu-update of the mesa-drivers or get the sources and compile them yourself nr. 1? only if the dev-team tells me, that my gpu is really not supported. I don't buy a new gpu just because it could be the reason |

I got that message too. I'm assuming it simply isn't supported. It could be the drivers need to be updated, but I am not willing to get the latest sources and compile them myself. Like I said in my first post, other 3D games work fine(like Nexuiz). Beryl works fine. This game just doesn't appear to like my IGC.

Just look at the game requirements: an Nvidia or an ATI card; that's all folks.

Guess I should have checked the website more thoroughly. Turns out my onboard chipset is still in an experimental stage and may or may not work. In my case, no worky. Thanks everyone for your comments.

Yeah, the intel GMA series cards can do some 3d stuff with the drivers, and the drivers for them are all f/oss, if only ati and nvidia would follow intel's lead on that... But things may change as intel has stated that they'd like to get back into making videocards again, real ones like they used to before they got sued for monopilization, which now it won't matter cause AMD bought ATI and even tho noone cares VIA still uses S3 graphics cards in their stuff.
I'm still waiting for nvidia to start making their own CPUs lol, won't that be an interesting battle. They're great at doing graphics cards and mobo chipsets, tho their raid stuff needs work it's 2/3rds of the hard stff right there, not much of a stretch for them to start making CPUs as well with what they know.

Onboard graphics don't really cut it, especially since most don't even *actually* have any memory - they just quote an amount they borrow from the system memory..
Just get a nice second hand Nvidia or something. I still have a 5200 and it runs pretty as a picture.. Trix (Ignis Marksman) x |
