The Earth's magnetic poles have switched polarity many, many times before. It's a natural process like a pendulum swinging back & forth from extreme to extreme. Once a shift starts, it often takes 10's of 1000's of years to proceed full cycle from full-strength positive to negative & vice versa. When the 'pendulum' is near the 'middle', the magnetosphere is not nearly as strong as it usually is. Solar winds (very fast charged particles from our Sun) hit the Earth's outer atmosphere & strip a tiny portion of it away (if totally unprotected for 1,000,000's of years, we'd lose our air, just as Mars did when it's molten core cooled & no longer provided a magnetosphere). Along with ozone depletion, this also means alot more radiation gets thru the shielding provided & reaches the Earth's surface where we are, causing increased risk of cancer if people don't take proper precautions or who get overexposed over the course of their lifetimes. The shift we are in at the moment began many 100's of years ago & most say we have a long while yet before pole polarity has shifted & the magnetoshere begins to increase in strength once more. So, remember to be careful & wear sunblock, hats, & other protective clothing when you intend to be outdoors for extended periods of time (over 10-15 min.). The 'mayan thing' has nada to do with this & is an over-hyped axial tilt astronomical alignment that also is itself an entirely natural & progressional cycle. Don't fear the sun, the stars, the calendar or the future; fear what man is doing & planning as I type.
