Default Understanding RO playerbase in terms of OS.

Since the release of Regnum on Steam there has been many reviews of the game on various websites. While all of them have both positive and negative reviews it is easy to observe a certain tendency: windows oriented sites (like steam itself, for example) seem to have more scolding posts, while linux games sites generally have more approving (for example: http://www.gamingonlinux.com/article...-on-steam.1796).

However the OpenGL port of the game engine is underperforming and there is growing concern that the developers have no intention of addressing this situation: http://www.championsofregnum.com/for...ad.php?t=95962

Considering this, I imagine it would be useful to understand the current player base in terms of OS they use.

Interesting poll. Although this wont be conclusive data of the user base, it should give some insight into how common Open GL users are.

I use linux on my main computer meaning also I play on opengl mode.
My laptop has windows, but I used opengl on it too to run regnum simply because opengl gave me better performance with higher settings than directx could do. I don't mind few graphic glitches, they never were that bad that it would have disturbed my gameplay.

I will not be installing windows on the computer I use most, meaning that if NGD totally drop opengl support I most likely won't be able to play this game anymore. Hope it does not happen.

I play on Windows and I'm forced to play with OpenGL as it provides me a little more FPS. Safe mode also. Otherwise I'd play on DirectX.
I wouldn't switch OS for any game so far.

Have only ever used linux for a number of years. (since 1996 I believe...)

Currently using Ubuntu after being an Arch and Slackware user for most of those years, simply because I have a Brand New laptop that uses UEFI with GPT partitioning, and I wanted a distro that already supported it by default.

Been using Linux for around 10 years now. Started with Red Hat moved to Fedora and wound up with Ubuntu. I love the stability with the LTS releases and never have to reinstall because some virus eat my system. I play Regnum on two different computers, one being AMD cpu with Nvidia graphics and the other AMD (APU) Llano no additional graphics card installed. Both can be pushed pretty hard and neither have to run in any safe mode. I have without a doubt found my home with Linux.

Linux here too. Since 2006 (Thanks to the horrendous Windows VIsta that convinced me to switch definately). I keep Windows 7 only for a couple of games.

I remember a NGD developer spawned a poll ingame on Amun some years ago asking which OS we were using. IIRC the result was around 20 or 30% of Linux users.

Anyways even if the OpenGL renderer of RO has always been unloved, it wasn't performing as bad as it is now. The last "NG3D update" that was supposed to bring more quality and FPS had a totally reverse effect for us OpenGL users, not speaking of all the removed and missing features compared to the D3D one...

I still don't understand why NGD likes the burden of maintaining both renderers. Since it seems they want to keep their game crossplatform they should only focus on the OpenGL engine since it's available on all the platforms you can imagine, contrarly to Direct3D. Verily this is an useless duplication of efforts that directly harms a fair (and I bet the most 'loyal' one) share of RO players.
If NGD was a big company why not, but so far it seems they can't afford such a burden (IIRC only surak is working on the OpenGL versions)

I really hope the steam release will speed things up in this regard.

PS: One small thing that tickles me is that you should have written Direct3D instead of DirectX in the poll. DirectX is a complete set that includes DIrect3D, DirectDraw, Direct2D, network and input management.

PS(2) : At least I think they read my thread listing the engine issues, since I got a 20 point worth green karma from it

According to this post in the spanish section, the OpenGL renderer is deprecated on Windows because they want to simplify their life and that generally the drivers on Windows perform better for D3D than OpenGL (which is not true for NVIDIA at least...).
Now, to force the OpenGL renderer on Windows you need now to set the registry key "ForceRenderizer" to 'opengl' which is located at :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NGD Studios\RegnumOnline (windows 32 bit)
or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\NGD Studios\RegnumOnline (windows 64 bit)

Because a simple switch in the launcher was too mainstream I guess...
