You're exaggerating (how many meters?). Those guards are needed.
I know there is no point in protecting AFK ppl. Those ppl are already automatically logged out by timeout mechanism and thats other problem.
The problem of topic is that players killed while grinding and spawning at altar are killed again by save campers when protection wears off. Usually campers are waiting till the protection wears off. The non-hunter class cannot run away, the only option is to log out. Now its possible to heal and fight small groups of 2-3 hunters camping the save. Before protection wears off guard will deal enough dmg to camper and definitely help to escape.
