I would love to see hourly numbers as well. Probably the closest we have is the hourly fort capture numbers from
http://rostatus.heroku.com/stats/horus
Fort captures is a weak approximation for RPs exchanged, which is itself an approximation (but I'd guess a stronger one) for 'fun had', but I think it was Donald Rumsfeld who said "You capture a fort with the hunters you have, not with the barbs you wish you had." or something like that.
One thing I noticed about the graph is that it looks pretty much like Alsius and Ignis just swapped places compared to what it looked like several months ago. Then, you could count on two thumbs the number of hours where Alsius had more captures than either Ignis or Syrtis, now, you don't even need two thumbs for Ignis.
Second, the graphs seem pretty much in sync. When Ignis was in its heyday, their graph was pretty clearly shifted to the right compared to the Syrtis/Alsius graphs. Now, the graph peaks (in position, not in height) are pretty much aligned at about the same time (with a few outliers) - Ignis has shifted its peak times to align with Syrtis/Alsius'. (Or all the California Iggies left.

)
So I think it's a combination. There are timezones when Syrtis needs to boost its numbers, and timezones when Alsius does, (timezone balance) but Ignis needs a boost across pretty much all timezones. (realm balance)
I was worried that we would see three separate graphs, with widely separated peaks - this would be really hard to balance, but it looks like the popular times are pretty similar for all realms.
I'm not really sure what we can do about it, as players, except the obvious sort of things: if you're trying to get your friends to play, encourage them to pick your own realm if they're going to be playing in a low time, or to pick Ignis (or the understaffed realm-du-jour) if they're going to be on in your peak hours.
