As I said on IRC, I don't even think it's that much overpopulated.
Ignis and Alsius have smaller groups and they manage to get big rp in their clan raids.
Syrtis just piles up in some random zerg and get 1rp spam - a lot.
Alsius is more organized - I don't know about Ignis, They seem to be masters of attacking from behind ;D
That's why I think being overpopulated doesn't mean a thing as long as Syrtis really just spams with itself.

So, Matt, in general - yeah ^^ there is a huge gap, but not in skills
