I noticed this the other day ... I ran into a guy while killing forceful thralls which I can solo easly .. maybe about 10 or so before needing to rest so they are no problem for me. I got an invite to group so I did.

Normally I get (if I recall correctly) 386 xp per kill with a 110 challenge bonus. Personally I was probably pulling about 300 xp per kill with him in group then then a challenge on top of that and the group bonus too. I can only assume that this guy was getting approximately nothing for xp.

It does seem a bit unbalencing especially since it seemed about the same for me in gains of xp to have him around. We killed only a bit faster, but instead on trying to keep my pet alive, I just kept him alive. In my opinion, the xp should split evenly.

I could see this same problem happening if I was to focus on heals and buffs only and forget about my pet. I would never do damage and then I would make no exp.
