How do you exit out of the actual game?

Hit "ESC" then select "exit"

Does that actually work for anyone ?

As soon as the game disconnects it just hangs and requires a ctrl-alt-del.

Yes, works for me. 3 different machines, 2 Kubuntu and one XPsp2.
