Default Are you bored? Then help me with something XD

Ok,

My computer has had some "problems" for awhile now actually, but now its gotten to the point where its unlivable, and I want to rip the hair out of my head.

So, without further ado, maybe someone will give me an answer to my questions.

Starting out, my CPU fan is insane... I mean insane, its running at roughly 6000+ RPM, I have tried programs, help guides, but nothing works, I actually want an answer on how to manually (NO not cutting a wire or making a homemade electric control) but how to change the fan speed, like from an installation or smthing. I don't want an answer saying buy this, or a link to a website with no help. This is the mega problem, and one I really care about the most.

Second problem, ive never heard of anyone to have this, but my computer has window's installer coming up like crazy, its just a little box that says: "Preparing installation..." And then it disapears. Apart from it being an annoying box, it makes it impossible for me to play fullscreen games, it usually interupts what im writing aswell, and interupts whatever im doing on the computer, usually minimizing fullscreen programs.

Third problem, when my PC starts up I have a screen that says "Pick your selected operating system:"

And theres the choices

Windows XP Home Editon
Windows XP Home Edition
Windows XP Home Edition Recovery Console

Yeah, 2 windows XP, one has all my files and everything, another has nothing, and the Recovery Console is you know a copy of the normal system.
I want to know how to delete the other Windows XP, or maybe even get this screen to stop coming up.

Yeah thats it, some crazy shit So maybe someone with some skillz in this area can help me. Its appreciated

Except for format and reinstallation of Windows and all its programs, you can try to check whether you have trojans/viruses/spybots/rootkits/backdoors on your comp. Cause that pop up you're having seems to me like an infection thing. Believe you me, it's really hard to detect some things, so you might want to scan your pc with few programs such as Avira, Nod32 and various anti-spyware programs.

The fan, I guess you might want to buy new one. I know you didn't want to hear this, but I guess it just isn't compatibile with your hardware. My programs never worked with fans. When I upgraded my graphic card lately I discovered that my fan just melted and soaked into graphic card. And the card was still working. gah! So really, you might want to consider buying new CPU fan. It's a cost between 30 to 70 zl. It's really cheap imho. I think I have one spare fan too, it has old style pin system so your motherboard may be ok with it.

Also I have maaaany computer parts and I am willing to take them to Lódz if you need anything else. I can even come and try to fix your pc in case something happens.

Besides you can try checking BIOS setup for your fan speed.
Does your fan also contain huge radiator or just a small pair of copper pipes?

I can always come to you and check out what's wrong. Hard to help without seeing the problem :]

I also bet there is a way of preventing such pop up in the CP, but I will have to check it

Ah ok finnaly an answer someone gave me that made sense.

Well yeah ever since I got the new mothboard my fan has been running hectic, and it makes sense since American things don't work on polish things, (amazing how everything else works on american things) it was the same case when I bought an MP3 and it didn't work.

I'll post a picture of my fan when the computer is off.

As for the windows installer thing Im pretty sure its not a virus, it could be also a result of the american things working on the polish motherboard.

Uh speaking of viruses I think I got one actually when I was looking for a free video recorder for the contest (see the things I did for you NGD ?) it disabled all my virus protection, McAfee, and totally wiped out Norton,

I think im going to get Windows Vista, back up all my computer data on CD's, and totally start my computer fresh.

I would be 'honoured' if you even touched my PC Piz XD
you can come stay for dinner aswell if you want ^^

I also asked on an internet forum and got 2 good answers:

Lets see what we can do... I spoke to one of my techs (Manitou), and he has some ideas that *may* be able to help you.

1) Fan Speed
a) You plugged the wrong voltage connector into the fan so the motor is receiving more juice than it should. This would also be why the attempts to control the fan with software aren't working...the software is looking at the wrong connector.
b) Try looking into the BIOS to see if there is an issue there, or something that will allow you to control fan speed. BE CAREFUL! Save your original settings before changing them
c) The CPU may be running obscenely hot. Was the thermal compound applied properly between the CPU and heatsink?

2) Multiple OSs
Congratulations...when you re-installed Windows, you installed s SECOND copy of XP. You're now dual booting. To get around this, you'll have to either remove (uninstall) one version, or simply format and re-install again. This will take care of both issues. I am presuming that you only have one HDD...

3) Windows Installer...
Sorry, it's annoying (personal experience). We had the same thing happen on our work PC after they forced some updates about 12-18 months back. They eventually had to physically roll-back some drivers and re-install them before it would stop. However, with a touch of luck...taking the more severe option in two (above) should solve this issue as well. If it doesn't, try posting the question on the Microslut website forums.

Good Luck!

Trouble is, it seems only a handful of people here are super with computers and then there's a slightly larger group with a reasonable idea and lots who know not much. (I don't belong to the first group. ;-D )

Personally, I'd take this one to a decent computer forum and if it wasn't responded to in a couple of days or so, bump it back up. Try one of these:
http://forums.majorgeeks.com
http://bleepingcomputer.com/forums
http://daniweb.com

Major Geeks I go to quite often and they have different forums for different things, such as a Hardware forum, Software, Malware, etc. I think the others do as well. I suggest either picking which seems the most sensible problem and putting the whole story in there or posting each problem in the appropriate spot and mentioning in each post that this is one of x problems you have posted and the others are in blah and blah forums. Then people can look at everything in case any turn out to be related.

Only suggestions I have are have you remembered to take the CD out of the drive? Just wondering if that's causing your boot message. Otherwise it might be the bootstrap(?) that needs editing because it's ended up with more entries than it should have. I don't know how to fix that but dualboot or dual boot is a key word/phrase for that. Or you may have actually installed Windows twice - have you checked that isn't the case? They would be on different partitions.

The fan speed might be something you can deal with in BIOS Setup - you certainly have a new BIOS if you have a new motherboard so try getting in there and looking for performance and monitoring type entries. BIOS is usually entered with F1, F2, F10 or F12 or Del. (It won't be F8 - that's reserved for Windows boot options.) If you don't see a message on screen about entering Setup as the computer starts to boot but do see a manufacturer logo, try the Esc key to see the information. Are you sure that this isn't normal for the fan? Did you get a new fan when you got the motherboard or is it the old one?

To solve the popping up install window, I can only suggest that you try this:
-- Click on Start --> Run.
-- In the text box, type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes and with only one space which is between the c and the / character and 2 letter N's:
sfc /scannow
-- Click OK.

This will take anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour to run and might require the Windows CD. It's checking the system files are all as they should be and replacing any that need it.

Anyway, a good forum will be better than trying to get that lot solved here, I think. Good luck!

To be honest, your motherboard might have some electricity issues and it's the most possible answer to the fan speed. Anyway, some fans are working that fast normally and it shouldn't be a problem unless the sound is really bothering you. I suggest a new fan indeed.
BIOS shouldn't be touched in that case, btw. Unless your CPU gets higher temperature than 60 degrees :P around 42 should be ok

Don't get Vista. Unless everything you own is legal and you enjoy being spied on. XP or Linux, but no Vista. DANG IT. Don't touch Vista. My XP works perfect ever since I installed it. You gotta get service packs and some patches but there is no trouble if you make things right. That double boot thing is very possible as those guys said. Try to google that stuff around. Personally I'd just drag some geek from Uni and paid him to fix your stuff they'd do anything for money, believe me no, no sex for you.

The help you received there was a pretty good one. Provided with experience, as for the pop up, I never had it. Try getting some action around it and see how it turns out. But first, save your private stuff on flash memory or CDs/DVDs and proceed to the classic format

I don't know much, I'm not a tech pro. I just raised my baby PC ever since I threw out that ol' IBM

Hi Edge,

I would suggest a freshly format and install of XP as well. Store your personal stuff on CD.
If you install, maybe you want to make to partition your harddisk (dont know how big your HD is) into two parts. One part ~20GB for Windows and programms and the other rest for personal stuff and games. That makes it easier in later formats, because then you dont have to do backups all the time.

The FAN... Has your FAN a three wired cable or just two? In case of two, it cannot be regulated and is just running at full speed. In case of three...hmm... maybe some settings in the BIOS. Maybe you can see the temperature of your CPU there as well. As PIZ already said, if the temperature is too high, it would not regulate down. Some fans just regulate after some drivers have been loaded, but that i havent heard for CPU fans yet - mostly only for graphic card-fans.

Be cautios, if you should somehow remove the FAN/Cooler from the CPU, because there should be some heat conducting paste between. A small film of it should be between your cooler and the CPU, otherwise your CPU may going to be overheated and your FAN cannot move the heat out, because it didnt get it properly.
Did you encounter some performance issues after playing regnum or doing other CPU consuming tasks? That would then possible lead to a overheated CPU that is stepping down its speed to not burn out. But that you can check with some temperature monitoring tools.
But it would probably not explain a high speed running fan during the first minute of PC start.

And VISTA will probably not solve your problems. I would step back to XP if i could with my new system. In the last two month i had more trouble with Vista then with XP for the last 5 years.

If PIZ is somehow near you, i would take his help. He sounds as he has worked on (American/Polish)PC-hardware for some time

Yeah its a 2 wire fan I belive,

But the thing was with my old motherboard it was running only at max 4000 RPM and only for about 5 seconds, that was when the PC was starting up. Other then that it was always running at 1000 RPM, its a fan made specially actually because its suppossed to be quiet, and it was, until I got the new motherboard.

Ok I guess no Vista, so I need to backup all my data today on CD's. What after that? Should I go straight with an uninstallation of the 2 versions of Windows I have? Because I guess when I reinstalled XP I intalled a second one but on some other part of my computer, because there is very little memory there, about 512MB and my Hard Drive is 100GB, so how would I go about unistalling both versions?

Also in that case do I need to touch my Hard Drive at all? Or just leave everything on there? If I uninstall Windows does all the data on it free up again, or does it become junk data and takes up space causing more problems?

About that heat conducting paste, when I installed the new motherboard all I remembered was some paste between the board and the Processor, but its still there. My fan has no paste anywhere near it, its just screwed into the back of the PC and connected via a 2 wire cable to the board.

BIOS won't let me edit anything with the fan speed, all I can do is monitor the speed and temperature, it all looks fine, its just the insane fan speed. I'll post more when I get home.
