I am speculating that my issue is related to the mesa package I am using as it started after upgrading my mesa package, I've not found an older binary package to download and test this however, I suppose I could compile the older version and test. I haven't tested whether I have the same problem on windows and opengl, but d3d performance on the same system allows me to play with a lot more FPS and no texture issues (can also play in shader 2.0 under windows). I have noticed a regression in performance under opengl, and I wonder whether this is the game or my drivers! |

Radeon driver and all the others open source drivers don't handle the textures very well, you need to use fixed mode and safe mode in order to see all textures OK.
for sure, the other way is by using propietary drivers
