press F11 to get the console, then /vg_camera_far_plane iirc.
<TAB> will autocomplete.
You can set it as high as you like, but around 4000 the effect does not increase anymore.
Too bad the wireframe mode doesn't work anymore...

1. Turn off the fog, so the view is clear
Code:
/vg_enable_fog 0
2. Set the view distance
Code:
/vg_camera_far_plane 2500
3. Increase the radius, where the terrain loads
Code:
/cl_terrain_load_radius x
The default number here is 3.
If you set this variable too high, the game will crash, so I keep increasing it until the game crashes, and next time i run the game, i know the maximum value. I found that this maximum value does not depend on your hardware, but it depends on the spot where your character is standing. Maybe it crashes when trying to load a terrain that does not exist (is out of the map) ?

4. After the terrain loads, make it more detailed
Code:
/vg_terrain_lod 0
5. Load objects like trees, rocks, forts
Code:
/cl_mapobject_load_radius x
Set this variable equal to /cl_terrain_load_radius
