The developers are currently testing new features on Amun. Amun will be up in a few days =)

Actually,
We are not currently testing anything and that's exactly why it's closed. We are also aiming to change the impression that Amun is just another official server, it was never meant to be open at all times (Its purpose is detailed here). We did analyze the possibility of keeping it always open but you'd be surprised the amount of misplaced feedback we receive on a daily basis (bug reports on things that are work in progress, reports on loss of items because Amun database was reset, reports on discrepancies about the characters). On the other hand, we appreciate all the feedback gathered unnofficially but it has proven to be more efficient if we organize the tests (There is already a testing team made of volunteers). Last but not least, the fact that Amun was constantly open in recent months was due to constant server performance and stability testing (keeping the server running just to see if it crashes was one of the reasons). While this could be usually the case, it's not guaranteed. Regards

Thats really a point, as we dont have a possibiity to check if a painting fits our imagination without actually buying the colors on live, the testserver is much appreciated.
Another thing is testing configs, pvp and be able to chat with each other, tests how this or that armor looks like without wasting gold.. Couldnt you find a way to get both interests solved? you could eg. make a window like the premium Advertising one pop up on login wich explains in some sentence what this server is about. Its a pity that its closed and the possibility to test things out is really wanted by many players i know. Last edited by Aensor; 03-02-2009 at 08:17 PM. |

I was hoping the sever would be up in a few days, but I see why its down. Amun should stay experimental, and I totally agree with Aensor. Amun also gives us a view of the upcoming updates before hand

Honestly, I think Amun being down should be the norm, unless they're testing for specific things that require a lot of continuous feedback and analysis. You have to think of Amun as being the staging server. The -only- reason it should be on an open network is for mass-testing and data collection so they can analyze the performance as per a real-world scenario, and even that should be done within short time frames. You know, announce a testing phase, let players sign in, and let the test run for x-amount of time. Once enough data has been harvested and analyzed, throw it back onto the closed network, and start the dev-cycle anew, fixing bugs, tweaking settings and optimizations, etc. Then, after the changes are made, pop it back on live for another round of testing. If the tests look good, and the update performs as expected, then migrate the updates to the live servers. Er, at least that's an example, and similar to the workflow where I work.
I mean seriously, leaving it on the open network for long indeterminate periods of time.....just imagine if someone snooping around found a loophole that gained them root access, and they somehow manage to hop to the live database? Now you've got a royal mess; a large and angry mob of players, bugged items and characters, loss of ximerin or things people have paid for, etc., and probably phones ringing off the hooks. If it's realllly bad, then you're looking at restoring from a backup, which in a production environment means loss of time and money no matter which way you cut it. I mean, chances of that actually happening are pretty damn small, but very real. Hackers have to practice somewhere before they hit a big or famous target right? Well, people like you, me, universities, small businesses or even NGD are the practice grounds. |

Why dont u make appair a window when u press Amun saying something like "ATENTION: Amun is NOT an official server. Things that you do here won't be done in the official servers. We wont solve any problems caused in this server.". This way, they wont have any excuse like "Oh, I didnt know that it wasnt an official server", for example, so you can just ignore the feedbacks from Amun. I (and most of us) find Amun very useful to check some skills, buy some weapons, etc etc. Regards |
