Really really stupid question from Alsius

I've been running around with an alternate character on Alsius (just a level 9 warrior), going through the beginner's quests, and I've found myself stuck on one in particular.

I'm supposed to kill an Aquantis Leader.

A search on this board revealed only that the quest had been, at one time, bugged and not doable, but has since been fixed. Not very helpful, as my problem is that, though I have in fact found him, I can't seem to figure out how to get to him -- he appears to have spawned on Thundermace's ship, and from the looks of it, there is no immediately obvious way to climb up on deck with him.

Do I need a ranged-type character, like an archer, to be able to kill this guy, or is there actually a way onto the ship that I've missed completely?

You should not need a ranged attack to kill him. He does not normal spawn on the boat. If you check again it most likely will not be on the boat.
