Default Calling all emo kids and prog-rockers

So I have a bit of a debate with a co-worker, and I need the opinions of "younger" people.

So would you guys consider Coheed and Cambria prog-rock or emo?

And please, no wikipedia garbage, that's been omitted from the bet.

Between the two Prog-rock is more suiting, in my mind they're more... Maybe Alternative (?) But anyway, certainly not emo.

Progressive for sure, emos is different. A mix between death, punk, heavy and alternative metal, mixed with a little "disco" in newer versions. ^^
I think My Chemical Romance is a emo band trying to express themselves. I think they're doing something wrong tho XD
This is newer emo music, what I call Emo-Nerd music. Used in almost all gaming videos, especially World Of Warcraft.

Btw, I'm NOT emo, I listen to Nu-Metal ^^ I just learned my lesson in heavy music.

Id rather say that's AlternRock, Post Grunge slightly. If they are emo then Seether, Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, Alter Bridge, Dark New Day, and Egypt Central are blah blah.

I see where the emo comments can come from though, the vocals ARE stretched a little too much.

Well, it sure has many things in common with the prog scene. Too many to not concider it progressive: the "randomness" of some riffs, the way they use high pitched harmonics, the length and diversity of the song. Those are elements not as common in "emo music" (whatever that is?), at least not from my experience. Also, as many progressive rock/metal, they have a lot of choir and concert song. But they are definately on the "emo" side of the prog scene, if such side exisist - especially as a result of the effects on the song. Even if I know I've heard something like that in a undoubtely prog metal song (that I can't remember right now).

But then again, please remember that many of the prog metal/rock bands are much more "emotional" than both the oil soaked and the dragon slaying metal bands out there. Especially if they are more of prog rock than prog metal.

No, you won't understand the setting if you watch the first video. And yes, it takes like four minutes before he starts to sing in the second video.

That's what I think, but alternative might be a bit too broad(?)

Yeah, you are definitely right about that. Oddly enough, live, the lead singer sounds totally different than the studio stuff.

I totally agree. The syncopation and changes in time signature certainly makes me think they are leaning more towards the progressive side, but the vocals and some of the lyrics make me think emo. I guess the big problem I have is my definition of "emo" is somewhat blurry and I've always thought it was more of a sub-culture and not a musical style. Hell, I may be emo and not even know it!

I guess I can tell her that a group of experts has said that Coheed and Cambria fall on the side of "progressive". Hopefully she doesn't ask for the source.

Thanks guys.
