Anyriand they are not calling you black or Jewish. They are calling you "loser" or "crappy." That is the problem.

So... do you think homossexuals and goats are losers and crappy? I don't...

Maybe I'm missing the point here. In fact, I think I'm missing this whole thread's point...

Using derogatory terms for the oh so hated enemies is just part of the roleplay as I see it. I haven't heard the term "gelf" myself. "Belf" is rather an alliteration with "belch" and used for both Ignis and Syrtis, allthough it is a nickname for "blood elf" in some other mmorpg, I'm told. Never heard the interpretation "black elf" before.

My personal favourites are "pukes" for Ignis (due to the vomit-tainted landscape) and "barbies", as in Barbie-dolls, for Syrtis. (this term was coined by a player who deflected from Syrtis to Alsius on Horus) But a dear child has many names.

What do you (in Ignis/Syrtis) call Alsius players? Apart from the somewhat worn-out "smelly goats"?

Too bad we can't taunt each other in battle. I would love to exchange some creative insults and have a laugh. It's just a game.

BTW: The original meaning of the word "gay" is joyful or happy. Nowadays it seems to shift meaning once again into something akin to flimsy or daft. I don't really interpret the expression "You are SO gay!" as an allegation about sexual preference.

ah see gelf was started by the player Orimea Fionn, she doesn't play so much anymore but who knew it would take off so greatly.
but i totally agree its a game about war and hating the other realms. if your not offended by the pure violence this game provides why are you offended by some simple insults. i dont have a problem with anything in the game until im personally attacked and thats a bit different the using the term gelf.

for the record i still call you guys goats.... it just flows so well, i havent honestly heard any good ones for ignis tho =/

We all play a game and like it or not we are playing it together, just not on the same teams, you could call syrtis gelfs, tree-humpers, w/e its just something used to jokingly referance another realm (most of the time)

What I dont like so much are the players who take the whole realm vs realm thing way to seriously, up to the point where they seem to think, oh im in Syrtis so all of Alsius and Ignis must be assholes, I hate them all for killing me in Wz, No!!! Its a game, 'rage' finds its way into competitive games far to much nowadays (try playing COD:WM2 for 10mins without someone raging at you for killing them, regardless that they were shooting at you)

Play the game, call each other whatever you will, but use them only as names and keep it in game, remember their are people behind the players your fighting and most of them are great people, they dont deserve to be hated just for picking a differant flag to you.

if it offends you, don't play syrtis. Come over to ignis and be a tomato or tampon or any of the wonderfully non-offensive names they have for us.

BTW, I'd like to note that OP went immediately to the negative.
Perhaps a webster club is needed:

Definitions of gay on the Web:
  • Cheery:bright and pleasant; promoting a feeling of cheer; "a cheery hello"; "a gay sunny room"; "a sunny smile"
  • full of or showing high-spirited merriment; "when hearts were young and gay"; "a poet could not but be gay, in such a jocund company"- Wordsworth; "the jolly crowd at the reunion"; "jolly old Saint Nick"; "a jovial old gentleman"; "have a merry Christmas"; "peals of merry laughter"; "a mirthful ...
  • given to social pleasures often including dissipation; "led a gay Bohemian life"; "a gay old rogue with an eye for the ladies"
  • brave: brightly colored and showy; "girls decked out in brave new dresses"; "brave banners flying"; "`braw' is a Scottish word"; "a dress a bit too gay for her years"; "birds with gay plumage"
  • offering fun and gaiety; "a festive (or festal) occasion"; "gay and exciting night life"; "a merry evening"

Its also worth noting that a "Gelf" is actually a type of creature in certain sci-fi Genres.

In Red Dwarf, the Gelf was a shape-shifting monster who would feed on the emotions of the crew. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GELF

In The Dark Crystal, the gelf (lings) were a race of elvin-like creatures, but smaller than your typical elf.
