I did read somewhere that hardware on a console will run a game better that hardware on a PC (if the hardware is the same, as much as possible, gpu ram etc)

Because as Hydra mentioned, the console is optimized to run games, that's all it does, or at least that's all they used to do, they do branch into mutimedia more now. But the core is the same, its hardware/software is all built specifically with gaming in mind.

With most PC's gaming is not the focus. Even if you build your own from the ground up, unless you are some kind of programming wizz it won't be as specialised as a console. It'll always have a load of stuff running in the background that's not needed for the game you're running.

Of course, I have no idea where I got this from, or any clue about its validity or reliability, but this is what I've heard

And even if there is a answer on what actually runs what better in a comparative way looking only at hardware, with all the games around you're still back where you started. What does a game developed for both PC and Console run better on? How about comparable PC exclusives vs PS3 exclusives? Does Starcraft run better than Uncharted3? How about past the mere technical? Which puts out the most variety of fun games? Which genres are weak spots on each system?

And then! What about the individual persons skill set? For example I was a console gamer long before I started pc gaming, so though people may prefer keyboard+mouse precision in a shooter, when I played Mass Effect 1 on my pc I found it awkward to balance my keyboard use of cover, constant movement, skills etc. with shooting with the mouse, I never really got comfortable with it, where as I never had such problems with Mass Effect 2 on my PS3, I've even gone and beaten it on insanity. Now while this may apply to me, I don't doubt the total opposite would be true for other people.

Its a huge mess of questions that honestly aren't worth the time it would take to work out a meaningful answer for, I'm just writing this because I'm a bit bored x)
