Can't play in regular mode

For some reason I can only play the game in force safe mode and without any of the high end effects. I'm using an ATI card x1300 with all the full features of a good 3d card so I should have no problems playing this in regualr mode. I have Ubuntu/Linux 7.04. can anyone tell me what is wrong or at least help run this game so that I can play it the right way with all bells and whistles.
