Training Sword

Hi,
I've recently started to play this game, but I'm having problems. The problem is that every time I go to the warrior shop, he says to pick up the swords on or near the counter so that he can sharpen the training sword (which is right in front of me), every time i click the sword it doesn't appear in my inventory. Am I doing something wrong?
