newbie chosing class

hi, i decided to play on the Syrtis side (call me a tree humper, i don't care).
what class of character do we most desperately need in the front line right now?
what do each class do on the battlefield anyway?
i know the warriors are the tanks.
what's the difference between archers and mages?
sorry for the newbie questions, but the guide's not very clear on this issue.
