Fast writes and SBA can actually be detrimental, and can cause freezes and lockups of the entire system, I don't remember the details if it only works reliably on some chipsets or what, but it should be explained in the gargantuan nvidia readme ( /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA*/README.txt ).
Specifically what I was curious about was if agp was shown as disabled, because that can cause choppiness and/or freezing.
Do you use the kernel's or nvidia's agp driver (agpgart and nvagp)? Check if there's an nvagp option under the appropriate device section in the X config, there are 3 values, prefer agpgart, prefer nvagp, prefer one but fall back on the other if it doesn't work, don't remember which value corresponds to which method, but it should also be in the readme; You could try using whichever one you're not using currently and see if you experience a difference.
