Armour

Can someone please explain to me how the armour system works. I cannot see any reason to using armour at the moment, apart from the fact that it looks cool, because it doesn't seem to have any impact on the damage taken by anything.

I want to know how armour points convert into less damage taken (if that is what they do) and what the very bad to excellent scale does to the damage taken by that type ( is it a reduction/ bonus to the armour points vs that type or something else?)
