Well one more thing you could try is to turn off any compositing managers (compiz, beryl, etc.) if you have one enabled. It's a long shot, but there's no harm in trying if you're already at the point of checking out and compiling git drivers.

You'll need to restart X after adding this to /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
