What exactly is tiredness..?

The tips pop'd up and very loosely explained tiredness. When it says rest, does that just mean hitting to rest button to kneel and recover HP? (I do that a lot as I am currently playing a Barb) or does it mean you have to log? Please could someone define this aspect of the game better then the "tips", would be much appreciated!
