Ok, here's the explanation in layman terms:

You have a proton, that's a tiny atom without any electron... Like a stripped atom. Then you accelerate it to the speed of light through a very cold tunnel and make it crash with another tiny nude atom. As a result of the impact both of the atoms will "go boom" and some guys with a lot of computers will see what happens.

It's like a train crash, but smaller.
