+1 to having a linux livecd and a hdd always around.

If you use windows and dont have a proper system and backup storage ready you are basically asking for that to happen.

My sys, installed 16 21:38:49 2009, has crashed about 5 or 6 times, once because i installed beta nvidia drivers and crashed, and took like 10 minutes to fix, download times included. All the others because trying to run windows games on wine, the interface died and i couldnt switch to tty1.

I use Windows to play oblivion time to time.

So, yeah, burn that cd and get a cheap hdd. And store it safely, its useless if when you need it you cant find it. happens to everyone.

I tried rolling back to a previous version (a version that was 13 hours ago), but that didn't work.

Also safe mode with networking caused a BSOD as well. If it didn't BSOD, the screen would just be black, with only my mouse pointer.

Whats exactly broken on your sys? Video, sound, mice, networking?

I would rather fall back on a soft penguin than land on a pile of broken windows anyday

Okay, I don't know much about computers so bare with me.

How about taking the hard drive out and using it as a "slave disk" in another computer.

All you need to do is get someone who knows how to do it, but put simple is just screwing the extra hard drive to the other computer (I think you need to move a switch in it before) and the second computer can acces it like a CD. The faulty OS should not affect the navigation beacause is not being activated. This may help recover some stuff from it (documents, files, music etc), tough I doubt full isntalled games.

Not a clue. :/

I didn't install anything to make it go kaput. Just turned it off at night, as usual, came back in the morning and dead.

I did this with a old IDE hdd, worked fine, newer ones are all sata. All you have to do it put the correct wires in the correct place.

Thats perfectly normal on windows, and on mafia targets. Its not like you had a ultra obscure problem, but the guy wont come back and windows likely wont either. Try what Torg just told you first.

Its fun that after lots of years of use by million of users, lot of sales, money, user demands... windows doesnt provide any kind of system feedback other that 'i has a error waste a week fixing me for no given reason pl0x'.*

Microsoft doesnt take windows seriously.

*You dont even actually fix it, just reinstall and deal with driver problems yet again

I feel your pain dawg.
I would use Windows too if I could run all the latest Linux games on it, but sadly it just doesn't work if I don't recompile them using cygwin. Bummer.
