This error message is so funny, because there IS NO DirectX at Linux. It should be "OpenGL" at this message or "DirectX/OpenGL".

Hmm? There are (incomplete, but functional) analogues of DirectX components in Wine, and there even a Direct3D 11 state tracker in Gallium3D.

Are you able to get to the login screen at all? If you can, log in and look at the top for the Options. In there, select Force Safe Mode. Click the Back link at the top of the window and try to log in.

What version of Ubuntu are you on? I'm on 10.10. In my package manager I looked up 'Intel" and found all the x server drivers. My card is a GMA 950 and the drivers worked great
