About Server Maintenance Mode

I've been wondering about this for quite some time...

When it announces on your game screen that the server is going into maintenance mode, and you should log out now to prevent any problems... Exactly what is the worst that can happen if we stay on until the server kicks us out? I've heard of people losing stuff from server "crashes" or w/e, I don't know if they meant from the server shutting down for maintenance. I've just been following what it says, and log off right away just in case.

Is losing inventory items, stash items, gold, levels, warmaster coins or anything else a posibilty? What are other potential problems it can cause?
