Freeze when selecting ppl with mag weapon

I switched from opensource mesa to proprietary AMD radeon driver in hope to get better game performance and more eye candy. But for some reason, the game now freezes for a second whenever I select someone with new magnanite weapons. it doesn't happen with other players, only those with magnanite weapon. Any idea why is this happening?

Edit: It doesn't happen in safe mode (fixed pipeline). I think it may be related to the shiny animation thing on mag weapons.
